NIGEL TINKLER'S HORSES TO FOLLOW

NIGEL TINKLER rode over 250 winners as a professional jockey before taking out his first trainers' licence in 1980. Since then he has saddled well over double that total on the Flat and over jumps although he tends to edge towards the level these days, demonstrated by the fact that his Langton yard near Malton has only yielded one national hunt winner in the past 14 seasons.

"We have some jumps runners but they tend to be horses that haven't made it on the Flat and they aren't intentional jumpers," Nigel said. "We've been doing okay this year but it could have been a whole lot better as we have had nearly 50 runners that have finished second, third or fourth."

Here is a list of horses to follow Nigel has compiled exclusively for readers of attheraces.com

DUBAWI KING
He's a funny ride as he can be switched on or off and as a result is very keen or very quiet. Paul Hanagan won a 12f handicap on him at Hamilton in June and we're going to try a visor on him. He might go back to Hamilton later on in the season.

KING OF SWORDS
He's very well and has been unlucky not to win one or two more races this season. We've kept him busy and all his races have been at 5f, including when he beat Mr Wolf at Pontefract in August. He seems to like it best in August and September so this is his time of year. The rest of the season he just appears to go through the motions.

LAST DESTINATION
He won his maiden over 7f at Beverley in June and we're aiming him at a race at Redcar in early September. He's a sweet little horse and should win a nursery over 7f or a mile. We're having the back man have a look at him to check him out but I'm sure he will be fine.

MISPLACED FORTUNE
He runs in a 0-90 at York next and has been unlucky a few times. He's been second three times and might have turned some of those into a win with a rub of the green. We're very pleased with him and we had a nice opportunity to send him to the US but we've decided to hang on to him. He's on 89 at the moment so the handicapper might have a hold of him but you never know as he such a trier.

PIQUANTE
He's a very in and out performer which is a shame as he works a lot better at home. He'll shortly go to Thirsk or a 0-80 at York and I'm disappointed he hasn't won since joining us from Michael Bell. The nearest he has come was when beaten a length and a quarter into fourth at Doncaster in mid-August and we've been running him at 7f and 8f.

SALTERGATE
He'll probably go to Redcar next in early September. He was beaten a head and had a hard race at Redcar in April and has taken time to get over it. We've been looking for a seller for him but there haven't been a lot of suitable opportunities. He been tried in cheekpieces and we may reach for the visor now.

WEBBOW
He likes the ground to be on the faster side of good and is rated 91, mark he raced off when a cracking third at Glorious Goodwood in a valuable mile handicap. He actually didn't have the clearest of runs that day and there is a nice race for him on St Leger day at Doncaster or failing that we might wait for the Gold Cup meeting up at Ayr.

GORDON'S EYECATCHERS

IT was great to be back at Sedgefield recently after the Co Durham track emerged from its traditional midsummer hibernation and a few horses went into the notebook during an enjoyable afternoon.

First up is Grand Zouki , who fairly romped away with the opener under Barry Keniry. George Moore's charge bolted up on a return from a 115-day absence and he is even more effective at 3m than this sharpish 2m 4f.

Handicapping will be the option now but he should make an exciting chasing one day.

Sang Deng was still going well enough at the time of his exit, he unseated his jockey at the 7th, to suggest he would have played a hand in the finish. He has jumped soundly up until that point and I know connections fancied him to run a big race. He is worth another chance with the Micky Hammond yard in reasonable nick.

That fact was advertised later on when Archie's Wish led late on in the 2m 4f chase and then forged clear to win easily. He obviously loved this switch to fences after a short break and, on this evidence, he appears to have a bright suture at his new discipline.

Having tipped The Magic Bishop to ATR viewers beforehand I was a little miffed when he came home a heavily eased third in the 2m 1f novices' hurdle. I thought Malcolm Jefferson's charge was travelling like a winner at the top of the hill but lack of fitness after a 110-day break soon began to tell and he was allowed to coast home from the last. He's a half-brother to the stable's smart staying hurdler/chaser According To Pete and will surely be winning races when tackling longer distances.

HISTORY RECALLED AT LANARK

A MEMORIAL stone has been erected on the defunct racecourse at Lanark to mark the 100th anniversary of the airshow that is reported to have attracted over 250,000 spectators. A 30m high metal statue is to be unveiled later in the year.

The track, which closed in October 1977, hosted what was the first event of its kind in Scotland and only the third in Britain between 6-13 August 1910.

Lanark played a prominent role in early aviation after the airshow which featured pilots from seven different countries and it is now recognised as Scotland's first ever airfield.

There were a couple of flying displays during the 1920's and 1930's and the course had a licence for a couple of grass landing strips up until the early 1950's.

The memorial is the idea of The Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust which hopes to preserve former airfields as heritage sites.

Lanark was also the venue for Broon's first ever trip to the race so it has a lot to answer for!

WELL DESERVED ACCOLADE

Congratulations to David Murray who was presented with the Lifetime in Racing Award recognizing his contribution to the sport over the past 37 years at Hamilton Park recently.

Born in Glasgow's Maryhill in 1957, David embarked upon his career in racing with Tommy Craig at Dunbar aged 16 and during his time there David had nearly 60 rides as a jockey but sadly never rode a winner.

In 1989 he teamed up with Michael Bell at Newmarket and the combination has proved successful. David led up Michael's first winner, which also happened to be his first Group winner - Pass the Piece in the Fred Darling Stakes.

In 2010 the Bell yard celebrated its 1,000th winner, with David there for all of them. Other notable horses that he is involved with include the Oaks winning wonder filly Sariska.

David's day begins at 4.30am when he opens up his Racing Post, and starts in the stables at 6.00am where he looks after three horses. Although 53 he rides work most days and still gets the buzz from riding racehorses, despite having suffered a few broken legs along the way.

A lifelong Rangers fan, Hamilton Park racecourse was his regular destination when he was still at school and he is delighted that members of his family can join him to celebrate his achievement.

Vivien Kyles, chief executive of Hamilton Park Racecourse, said: "The Isle of Skye Whisky Owners and Trainers Day is our chance to celebrate the hard work and commitment from owners, trainers and stable staff who travel from across the UK to compete at Hamilton Park throughout the season.

"People like David Murray are the backbone of racing and without him and the others working behind the scenes, there would be no day at the races."

GOSSIP

CUMBRIAN transport tycoon Andrew Tinkler has been splashing out at the sales recently and no doubt some of the cash was funded by a recent share sale off that netted him and business partner William Stobart nearly £13m. The pair, chief executive and chief operating officer of the massive Stobart Group, are reported to be worth a combined £68m.

The company owns airports in Carlisle and Southend, operates contracts for business giants including Tesco and Coca-Cola and is currently building a multi-million port in the Cheshire.

Andrew has recently sent horses to Bryan Smart and also is represented on the owners' list with Michael Dods, Tom Dascombe and Nicky Vaughan.

His breeding and young stock interests are in the hands of Dwayne Woods in Newmarket and he has just newly appointed former RCA and Great Leighs executive Tim Jones as his racing manager.

The Stobart Group also announced the other day thay they are backing this year's Park Stakes at Doncaster's Ladbroke St Leger Festival.

Finally this time, good luck to jump jockey Ryan Mania as he is shortly getting married to fiancé Val Renwick.

Val had her 'hen do' at Perth races and Ryan seemed quite embarrassed by it all when I quizzed about proceedings on ATR.

I must do some digging and find out what the naughty girls were up to!
