Tim Vaughan Stable Tour
16 Oct 2009

In the past four seasons no trainer has made quite such an impact as Tim Vaughan.

In his first two seasons with runners under rules , 2005-06 and 2006-07 he send out one winner in each but the signs of much bigger things to come came in 2007-08 when he trained 14 winners, four contributed by the smart Kings Euro and three by City Affair.

However it was last season, with upgraded facilities that he really took off from his base in the Vale Of Glamorgan.

No less than 55 winners and although he ended the season looking for a horse to pitch him into the big Saturday races he underlined just how much he could improve a horse when he took Little Shilling from 77 to 126 winning six on the spin from mid-November to late December. This season a win at Bangor in September took him up to 130.

But if last season was a surprise to some then his start to the current campaign has been quite amazing. By the middle of October he had sent out just one winner short of last year's total with the season proper still to come.

What's more important, Vaughan now has the calibre of horse that will allow him to compete on the bigger stage.

It won't be easy but he does have a realistic chance of breaking into the top division having earned the patronage of owner Paul Beck who has send among others, Flintoff and Stan.

The one fact to bear in mind is the first time a horse switches yards and runs for this trainer for the first time.

Here he gives his opinion of his pick of the burgeoning team he handles.

ANOTHER BROTHER
7 b g Supreme Leader - Sister Rosza.

Former Jonjo O'Neill hurdler with one win from 11 starts, one over hurdles off 117 over three miles at Uttoxeter October 2008 and now 126 after most recent start when falling early in handicap hurdle won by Snake Charmer at Uttoxeter in March. Yet to race for present yard.
"Should be ready towards the end of October over hurdles and if that goes ok then he'll got to Haydock the following month for the fixed brush hurdle final. After that he'll go novice chasing. He's been turned away, had a wind operation and wants three miles. Wants the ground up to his eyeballs."

ARCTIC SHADOW
7 b g Bonny Scot - Dickies Girl.

Hurdler/ chaser in good form this season winning three of last four races, two in novice handicap chases over three miles off 95 and 102. Won handicap hurdle at Bangor over same distance penultimate start off 95. Good second latest run in three and a quarter mile handicap hurdle at Newton Abbot August 4 when length and three quarter second of eight to Knock Em Dead off 105 and now 111 over both obstacles.
"An out and out stayer that will get three and a half miles plus. I've put him away and he's being aimed for the Lincolnshire National at Market Rasen on Boxing Day - no ground worries. He'd have an outing before."

ATOUCHBETWEENACARA
B b/br g Lord Americo - Rosie Lil.

Maiden hurdler but progressive novice chaser from two and a half to three miles last season for Venetia Williams. Moved from 101 to beating Private Be 24 lengths in two mile five furlong grade two handicap chase at Cheltenham in April off 129. Now 148 and yet to race for present yard.
"Gorgeous looking powerhouse of a horse and although he's won and gone up he's still mentally immature. He is a bit gassy so we've spent time settling him and although I can see him getting three miles in time he's going to start off in the Boylesports at Cheltenham in November. Don't think he'd want extremes of ground."

BAILY STORM
7 br g Anshan - Euroblend.

Maiden hurdler in Ireland but won first race at initial attempt for present yard when beating Honours Graduate seven lengths in three mile maiden hurdle at Stratford in September off 114. Now 129.
"Progressing and I'd be looking to go in another novice with a penalty off 129 then I'll look at handicaps but he might be the type for the Pertemps Final at Cheltenham. He'd be suited by more cut than he's had of late. He'll be a three mile chaser next season."

BALLYAGRAN
9 b g Pierre - Promalady.

Ex-Irish hurdler chaser rated career high 136 in November 2007. Last win in two and a quarter miles hurdle April 2008 and rated 128 when half length second to Ballyholland in two and a half mile chase at Navan September 2008. Yet to race for present yard.
"Scopey and was second in the 2007 Galway Plate. He's been off with tendon trouble but coming back well and gets three miles so he'll be the type for lower grade handicaps."

CARRICK OSCAR
9 b g Oscar - Regents Prancer.

One hurdle and one chase win, latter came over 21 furlongs at Worcester August 7 beating Donaldstown four and a half lengths off 125. Went to 129 and well beaten second to smart Gullible Gordon over three miles at Chepstow October 10.
"A horse that is best fresh and ideally would have cut in the ground. He's being freshened at the moment but he might be near his handicap limit so it's possible he could be taken off the books and be prepared for hunter chases."

DARKSIDEOFTHEMOON
7 b g Accordion - Supreme Valentine.

Without a win over hurdles in ten starts from previous yard but readily won debut for present stable when beating Amalfi Coast three and a half lengths off 100 in novice handicap hurdle at Market Rasen August 15. Now 114.
"He cut into himself when he won but is a horse that has potential. Back in full word and it's possible he could go over fences, two and a half to three miles. With his mark he'll probably start in handicaps."

DEAD OR ALIVE
6 b g Exit To Nowhere - Avro Avian.

Three chase and one hurdle win from 25 starts, latest win was sole success over hurdles when beating Right Option over 22 furlongs in novice event at Market Rasen August 1 off 113. Well beaten ninth to De Soto off 127 in three mile handicap chase at Bangor latest start August 15.
"Very much a chaser and on a summer break. I could see him coming back and going for a novice hurdle round Fakenham but he's another that could be got ready for hunter chases with an aim for the Horse and Hound Cup at Stratford."

DINGAT
4 b g Exit To Nowhere - Dianeme.

Ability both starts in bumpers last season, latest when 20 lengths fifth of 15 to Barafundle at Chepstow in April.
"Works well and jumps well. He's improved massively over the summer and I might give him one run in a bumper. I'll start him at two, two and a quarter over hurdles and he'd handle soft."

DOCTOR ROBERT
4 b g Sakhee - Please.

Under achiever in 20 flat and hurdle starts until winning first run for present yard beating Kyoto a length and a half in two mile novice handicap hurdle at Wincanton October 8 off 95. Now 103 but still very interesting given stable profile with this type of horse.
"He was very fit when he won but can certainly win again because his mark isn't bad. Won't be hanging about and out well before the end of October, staying over two miles."

ETOILE D'OR
5 ch m Soviet Star - Christeningpresent.

Only one win in 27 starts over hurdles and fences but has shown ability and is now 69 over both. Yet to race for present yard and of interest for that reason alone.
"She looks ok, was a cheap buy at two grand and will probably head to Fakenham for a selling hurdle off this mark over two miles. Very gassy at home and probably wants to roll along from the front on decent ground."

FLINTOFF
8 ch g Diesis - Sahibah.

Four times hurdle and twice a chase winner for Venetia Williams. Most recent win came back in January 2007 in three miles handicap chase at Newbury off 122. Has improved in nine runs since, final one last season when just over two lengths second of 15 to Russian Trigger over four and a quarter miles at Uttoxeter in March off 136. Now 140.
"He stays very well and I'm looking at the Welsh National and I can see him having one run over hurdles before it. I'll put him in the Hennessy but I'm not sure he's that type."

GOBEJOLLY
6 b m Exit To Nowhere - Ollejess.

Maiden in 11 starts bumpers and hurdlers, once 85 but now down to 75. Yet to race for present yard and interesting off a platers mark.
"Bred to want three miles and fences and has just come back fresh and well from a break and will be out before the end of October but wants some juice in the ground. The mark is ok but I'll up her in trip, two and a half or more."

GREAT TSAR
6 b g Moscow Society - Simply Slippy.

Maiden in 21 starts hurdles and fences and has dropped from 100 in November 2008 to 83 for this season. Yet to race for present yard and on an exploitable mark.
"Once rated 100 and down to 83 so if I can get it to it's best form than it's got to be fairly treated. I might send him straight over fences in a handicap and he is slow enough on the gallops to make me think three miles is right."

HAYES PRINCESS
5 b/br m King's Theatre - Celtic Angel.

Won first of two bumpers last season and won two mile hurdle debut at Towcester October 7 beating Pilgrims Lane three and a half lengths.
"Very game and she made all the running at Towcester which takes some doing but she definitely wants two and a half miles. She'll go for a mares only with a penalty next time, possibly claim off her. After that I could see her being suited by a big galloping track like Newbury."

HIMAYNA
5 b m Generous - Himaya.

Unraced.
"like her a lot, decent bumper horse in the making and will make her debut when there's a bit of cut in the ground in the early part of November in a mares only. Somewhere like Bangor or Ludlow."

LITTLE SHILLING
7 ch g Bob's Return - Minoutette.

Won six handicap hurdles on the spin last season from two and a half miles to three miles three moving from 77 to 130 and beaten off that mark. Won second start this season over three miles at Bangor in September off 125 and well beaten latest start off 130 October 7. One win from seven over fences where he's 126.
"Disappointed me a bit last time but we scoped him and there was some mucus. He's on a course of antibiotics. I might take a pull on him and look at the Kim Muir at Cheltenham - he'll certainly be mixing hurdling and chasing even though he's not that big but jumps well. Goes on anything."

LORD FRANCOIS
4 b g Kapgarde - Bellambre.

Ex-French Hurdler chaser, unplaced in seven starts all around two and a quarter miles on soft or softer. Yet to race for present yard.
"Showed some ability at a decent level in France and he is a maiden which makes things easier. He'll start over hurdles, two to two and a quarter but I am pleased with the way he's grown and I would be looking towards late November/ early December."

MAKHZOON
5 b/br g Dynaformer - Boubskaia.

Ability in three starts for Paul Webber since January 15 to May 26 when third of eight, beaten eight lengths, to Moment Present. All five starts around two miles. Yet to race for present yard.
"Had a good summer break and is doing everything nicely and would be ready to run in the first part of November. Has a good action so he'll want decent ground and would start at two miles. I do like him."

MANOR PARK
4 b g Hernando - Campiglia.

Ex-Irish maiden hurdler around two miles and 135. Easy winner of debut for present yard when winning two mile novice hurdle at Wetherby October 14 beating Whispering Death five lengths.
"He'd had a wind op which would have helped him but I was very, very pleased with the way he did it and so was Seamus Durack. Probably go for a novice with a penalty then I'll look for a novice handicap on a decent day. It doesn't look as though ground is an issue. He might be quite good."

MASTER CHARM
5 b g Smadoun - Kandania.

Maiden who regressed over hurdles and fences last season and dropped from 112 to 107, tailed off latest start for Carl Llewellyn when fourth of six to Sendani in two mile chase at Fakenham in May. Has been two mile six. Yet to race for present yard.
"Had quite a few runs as a young horse when he had some very good form. Has come back really well from a summer break. He'll go novice handicap chasing off a good mark but I need to get his head in the right zone."

MISSION CONTROL
4 ch g Dubai Destination - Stage Manner.

In good form this summer landing novice hurdle hatrick from two to two and a quarter miles, latest in August. Off 120 when second latest start when eight lengths second of 12 to Fairoak Lad over two six at Market Rasen September 27 and now 121.
"Honest and genuine and although he's gone up in the ratings he will be suited by going over further, three miles should be fine."

MOORLANDS TERI
6 b m Terimon - Sandford Springs.

Won two of five bumpers last season and 1-3 when winning four-runner hurdle debut over nearly three miles at Uttoxeter October 4.
"Out and out galloper that wants three miles on soft ground so the going was against her last time at Uttoxeter and there was no pace. All that didn't help her jumping but she's had more schooling and will be better next time."

PICAROON
5 b g Jade Robbery - Anaam.

Irish bumper winner and won second British start when beating Snake Charmer nine lengths off 109 in two and a half mile handicap hurdle at Market Rasen in December. Fair fourth, beaten about five lengths, in two mile handicap won by Awesome George at Cheltenham January 1 off 116. Well beaten only run since in July over two and a quarter at Market Rasen off 121 and now 120.
"Pulled a muscle in his back at Market Rasen last time. A relentless galloper that I'm convinced wants three miles and fences. He'll be back in early November and I'm undecided what he'll do but it'll probably be a handicap hurdle. If he shows he's not quick enough it'll be fences. I feel there's a big day in this horse on good or softer."

RAILWAY DIVA
5 b m Laveron - Four Moons.

Ex-Irish bumper mare, best if two runs when second at Wexford early August. Yet to race for present yard.
"Needs building up but I can see her doing well in two and a half to three mile novice hurdles but she won't be out until late in December."

RARE ARTICLE
6 b m Definite Article - Czarina's Sister.

Maiden hurdle winner over two and a quarter in heavy May 2008. Disappointing last three runs of that year and ended 99. Now 110 hurdles and fences and yet to run for present yard.
"She injured her pelvis after her last run and has just come back in and looks a different horse, much stronger. She'll start in a handicap hurdle, two miles six to three miles and then straight into novice chases. She'll be ready in the first part of November."

RUPESTRIAN
3 b g Fantastic Light - Upper Strata.

Won over 12 furlongs at Lingfield in March off 74. Won three hurdle races from June to July from two to two and a quarter miles. Eight lengths second to Royal Max only subsequent start at Stratford in August.
"The ground was a bit too fast for his last run and he's out at grass. I'll bring him back in December because he needs decent ground and could be the type for Cheltenham Aintree, the Fred Winter Handicap might be ok. He'll want further than two miles in time."

SCORCHED SON
6 b g Norwich - Scorched Air.

Bumper and hurdle winner in Ireland, latest by four lengths at Sligo on soft August 6. Yet to race for present yard.
"Progressive and certainly going the right way and should be out by mid-November over two miles but will want further in time. He'll go novice handicap hurdling this season but he does want fences. I'm waiting for his mark."

STAN
10 b g Super Imposing - Take Care.

Talented around two and a half miles for Venetia Williams, won off 143 at Cheltenham January 1. Struggled off 154 and fell final start in Grand National off 154. Now 148. Yet to race for present yard.
"Probably won't improve at his age but a change of yard might suit him. I'll probably start him in the Paddy Power and although he ran in the National he's never won beyond two miles five. He's come back in really good order."

TRUE BLUE SAGA
4 b c Anabaa Blue - Saiga.

Ex-French maiden, best run when 11 lengths second of ten to Starluck at Kempton in December. Rated 117 on that but largely disappointing last four starts. Yet to run for present yard.
"Could be anything and I'm not disappointed with 117 but he won't be out until after Christmas and will start at two miles."

UNFORGETTABLE
6 b g Norwich - Miss Lulu.

One from 16 starts, two mile maiden hurdle at Wexford May 2008. Ability both runs for present yard over fences, latest when three quarters of a length second of eight to Folk Tune over extended two miles at Towcester October 7 off 119.
"Ran with the choke out first run for me at Huntingdon in late August when he was third to Red Admiral. He was much better at Towcester last time and jumped really well so I should think he can win a beginners chase then some novice handicaps. He's on a sensible mark."

WAR OF THE WORLD
7 b g Shernazar - Fairpark.

Former Irish chaser, one win over two and a half miles July 2007. Won debut for present yard over nearly three miles at Stratford September 5 beating Tempsford four and a half lengths off 125. Much better effort in defeat when under two lengths second to Valley Ride in valuable three mile handicap chase at Market Rasen September 26 off 132 and now 138.
"Doing very well for us and he'll run in the two and a half mile chase at Cheltenham on October 17. If that goes well there a race for him at Wetherby on October 30. Although he's been running over further I feel that around two and a half miles is better. The choke was out at Market Rasen last time and he was outpaced. At Cheltenham he'll be ridden handier. And I think the track will suit him and good ground."

WILD SIDE OF LIFE
6 gr g Exit To Nowhere - Gypsy Kelly.

Ex Irish maiden hurdler, fair run on debut for present yard when 17 lengths third of 12 to Bold Policy over nearly three miles at Fontwell in December. Debut mark of 106.
"In the long term he wants three miles over fences but I'll start him over two and a half over hurdles, possibly a novice handicap on good to soft."

The knowledge
The only thing to know about this yard at this time of year is to keep note of all the horses the trainer has taken over from other yards and be with them first time they run for him. His record in this field is very impressive and this tour gives first hand knowledge of those he has taken over and their progress.
