GALLOWAY CAN GO ALL THE WAY

With so many of the races at the Ebor meeting being Group or Listed class it’s impossible to have rides in all of them as my main man, Richard Fahey, just can’t cover all those options – there isn’t a trainer who can!

That means I’m a bit light on quality and quantity on Friday although I do think I’ve got a fighting chance of getting something on my last ride of the day, JEANNIE GALLOWAY in the Paul Malone Half Century Handicap (4.50).

The seven furlongs is spot on for her and she’s been a filly that’s just taken a few runs to come to herself – and it wasn’t a bad effort last time when she was 4lb out of the handicap but only beaten three lengths when she was sixth to Grissom at Doncaster last Saturday.

She’s off her right mark now and if it happened to rain then I’d fancy her chances even more. But the key to her is that the better the race and the stronger the gallop the better it suits her.

She can be a little bit keen and it gives me a chance to get her relaxed so if things drop right I think we are players – for a place at least.

I won on Coolminx last time but Richard rightly wants to claim part of the 6lb penalty back with Lee Topliss getting three off. It was pretty heavy when we won at Newcastle and that looks key to me.

Our other runner, Sioux Rising, has plenty on her plate with top weight despite Laura Barry claiming 7lb.

DESTINY'S LUCK CAN CHANGE FROM GOODWOOD RUN

If I’d been given the choice of anything to ride in the Racing UK Handicap (2.00) over 12 furlongs which starts the day I wouldn’t have found it easy.

There are horses in this, like Sharaayeen, who couldn’t get in the Ebor and was unlucky last time plus horses that still might be on the improve like Kiama Bay and Lady Chaparral who won very well at Carlisle last time.

But I’ve got a lot of faith in William Haggas and his horse Agent Archie caught my eye winning very well at Yarmouth last time. It was his first run for the yard since coming back from a long break in February and he might still be ahead of the handicapper despite an 8lb rise.

I could be doing an injustice to the field for the Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack (2.30) but it doesn’t look a particularly strong Group Two race to my eye.

In these situations I tend to side with proven group form rather than one that might improve so I’d be siding with Burwaaz.

His best form has been over five when he was fourth in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot then did well to finish second in the Molecombe at Goodwood when I was ninth on Miss Work Of Art.

He gave me the impression that he was well worth another try at six furlongs.

The Sky Bet Mobile Strensall (3.05) is another puzzle but I am very much inclined to forgive Green Destiny his defeat at Goodwood last time when he got absolutely no run in a big field over a mile.

I was really impressed when him when he won the John Smith’s Cup at York the time before and I honestly believe this more galloping track and nine furlongs will bring out his best again. To me he looks a class act and might have too much pace for Dux Scholar.

HOOF IT THE ONE TO BEAT

There’s no getting away from the fact that I’ve gone from being one of the leading players to taking a bit part in the Coolmore Nunthorpe (3.40) with the Bapak Chinta being a non-runner.

I’m on BREATHLESS KISS for his trainer Kevin Ryan but I’d rather be on one of his other two runners, Massamah who is improving rapidly.

But my pick overall would have to be Mick Easterby’s Hoof It.

I know he’s only won handicaps but they’ve been top drawer and I don’t think it’s a massive leap to group class races with sprinters. Ok, this is one of the best but he was so impressive winning the Stewards Cup last time that I think he can do it – he won with his ears pricked.

Now that the rain has stayed away I’d see Bated Breath as the big danger.

He’d won the July Cup everywhere bar the last ten yards and I don’t see the drop from six to five as a problem.

And as I mentioned when assessing the Great Voltigeur and the chance of Al Kazeem, Roger Charlton’s horses are in terrific shape.

GREAT TO GET THE CALL FROM THE BOYS IN BLUE

I got some very good feedback after winning on Sarrsar for Godolphin in the Shergar Cup and I’ve got the call for their newcomer MIZWAAJ in the Sky Bet Mobile Convivial Stakes (4.15).

A good horse often wins this and having looked through those with form I wasn’t overly impressed unless one has made significant improvement.

Therefore I’ll be looking at one of the newcomers to do the business and although Frankie is on the Godolphin first string Crying Wolf he can’t get it right all the time!

MY HOME WIN ON MAC FOR TEAM FAHEY

Everyone one got a real boost by getting winner on the first day of the meeting with Our Joe Mac – being based so close to the track it was a real home win for all the Fahey team.

I hope you were with me because I tried to be as positive as I could when assessing his chances.

In fact, the race didn’t really go to plan as the pace wasn’t as strong as I’d hoped but I didn’t want to sit as long as I did at Goodwood the time before when I thought he might idle in front.

As it was he really put his head down and battled – couldn’t have given me any more.
