Officials at the British Horseracing Authority are making every effort to ensure the major races from Saturday's abandoned card at Newbury will be rescheduled for next Friday.

The 'Betfair Super Saturday' fixture had been due to showcase the talents of Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Long Run as well as exciting novices Sprinter Sacre, Cue Card and possibly Grands Crus.

Newbury were forced to call off proceedings on Friday morning due to snow on the track, but talks have been ongoing during the day to try to reschedule the major races.

BHA spokesman John Maxse said: "The BHA have been working closely all day with Newbury, the sponsors (Betfair), the Levy Board and Channel 4 in an effort to save the key races and also to have feature events broadcast on Channel 4.

"Our preferred proposal is to stage a fixture on Friday. It would actually be a new fixture, albeit comprised of the bulk of races scheduled for Saturday. It will not be exactly the same card, but the Betfair Hurdle, the Betfair Denman Chase, the Game Spirit and the Scilly Isles Chase would all be saved.

"What is proving difficult to get confirmation on at this stage is whether or not Channel 4 can commit to broadcasting races live.

"There is a knock-on effect of that as no terrestrial coverage can impact on the amount of funding the Levy Board are willing to put in, which in turn then impacts on the values of the races which are due to be staged.

"We are working to see whether there can be a slot available for broadcast and it is our hope that we will have more news by the end of the afternoon."

If the rescheduled meeting is confirmed, it would certainly be welcomed by Long Run and Sprinter Sacre's trainer Nicky Henderson.

He said: "I do want Sprinter Sacre to have another run and I think Long Run is better with a run. We're getting closer (to Cheltenham), but I think he'd run again. We need to run the horses and depending what exactly they put on, I'd hope we'd be supporting it with the same sort of team."
