Towcester Course Guide

Towcester holds jump meetings between October and May and attendances have rocketed since 2002 when the Northamptonshire track made admission free on the majority of racedays.

Some notable horses have won races at Towcester before going onto Grade 1 glory. Refinement won a Mares Only Novices’ Hurdle in 2005 before winning the Punchestown Festival Stayers’ Hurdle winner the following season and in 2007 Albertas Run won a Towcester Novices’ Chase before going on to win the RSA Chase at Cheltenham Festival the following spring. A fresh development at the course is a Greyhound Racing track.

Jumps Racing

Towcester Jumps RacingTimeform

Right handed and extremely stiff with the final mile uphill. Punishing on testing ground, those horses who've expended too much energy early almost invariably failing to get home. Therefore, be wary of those who seem to be travelling strongly before the straight as the complexion can change quickly. The fences aren't overly stiff but the casualty rate is still high on account of so many falling through tiredness, whilst the two downhill fences running away from the stands are tricky. It's not unknown for horses to falter on catching sight of the stable entrance on the run-in on the chase track.

The first few times I rode at Towcester I thought that, had I not been in front, I was going too slow to jump the last. It can’t be true, obviously, but it does seem to be uphill all the way around. Despite the fact it’s a stiff track, though, it’s not easy to ride a waiting race, because that means you need to be making ground while you’re climbing. And that’s hard. If you do manage to get back to one who’s established a lead and it kicks again, then you’re in trouble. On heavy ground, the fences ride big too.
