Epsom Downs

Epsom might be home to the Derby and Oaks but it is also one of the most peculiar racecourses in the world. The present Derby course has been used for the race since 1872. The contours of the left-handed U-shaped track ensure a thorough test of the thoroughbred. The classic contenders run uphill for the first half-mile before sweeping left-handed and then downhill towards Tattenham Corner. The downhill helter-skelter run continues until the final furlong where the horses race uphill to the winning post. Balance and athleticism are essential whatever the distance. Races on the five-furlong sprint course are frequently spectacular — and very fast. The first four furlongs are downhill and the median time for a race is 55.68 seconds — compare that with Beverley which is nearly nine seconds slower!

Directions

By road
Epsom racecourse is just a few minutes from Epsom Town Centre on the B290 Epsom Downs Road or alternatively just off junction 9 of the M25. During the racing season, AA signs will mark all major approach routes. There is plenty of parking available both on site and in the surrounding areas and on the majority of days it is free of charge. For the Vodafone Derby Festival, it is advisable to book parking in advance via the racecourse.
By rail
Several mainline stations serve the Racecourse. From London Waterloo or London Victoria or Guildford, trains run direct to Epsom station where it is only a short bus or taxi ride to the course. Alternatively Epsom Downs or Tattenham corner stations both serve the local area.
