Few would argue that Newbury is one of the fairest tracks in Britain. The ground is usually good and the shape of the course is very well suited to a horse that likes to gallop. The Lockinge Stakes became Newbury’s first Group one race in 1995 and is the highlight of their Flat year although there is top quality racing throughout the season - from the classic trials in the spring (the Greenham Stakes and Fred Darling Stakes) to the Mill Reef Stakes for two-year-olds in September and the Horris Hill Stakes in October. Newbury is a left handed circuit of about I mile 7 furlongs. There is a straight mile which joins at the five furlong marker.

A big stiff galloping track which really suits long-striding accurate jumpers. There are eleven fences per circuit and probably as many as three of them can be major turning points in any chase: the cross fence (five out), the final ditch (three out) and the final fence.
The cross fence stands alone on the side of the track just before the turn into the home straight. It comes just as the race “hots up” and can catch out horses at a critical stage. The final ditch comes when horses are really racing, but also in long distance races getting tired too, so horses often make mistakes here. The Newbury final fence is probably as critical as any final fence in the country because a clean jump here isn’t enough if fighting out a close finish.
A horse and rider also have to be set up for the run-in and the elbow around the water jump just prior to the finish. Jump left here, like leading novice Fundamentalist did at the Hennessy meeting, and you lose.
