With the advent of the all-weather track Lingfield may not be as ‘Leafy’ as it once was but it still offers some excellent racing on the turf in attractive surroundings. The recently-completed new grandstand offers excellent facilities. The highlight of the turf season is Derby and Oaks Trial day in May. The downhill run towards the home straight is similar in camber to Tattenham Corner and the trials have often been a good pointer for Epsom. Teenoso, Slip Anchor, Kahyasi, and High Rise all went on to Derby glory. Aliysa (later disqualified), User Friendly and Lady Carla doubled up in the fillies’ Classic.

A tight, turning track with a downhill stretch into the home bend. The idiosyncrasies of this comparatively fast Polytrack surface give stalls 1-5 a distinct advantage over those drawn higher in races over 5f and 6f.
In races over 7f and further, those drawn middle to high often have the edge. For example, there is a longer run to the first bend in races over 7f and 1m which allows hold-up horses from higher gates to secure a good early pitch.
Beware of falsely run races. Jockeys have the confidence to sit patiently in the pack, as kick-back in minimal, and many of them are reluctant to commit until they spin off the home turn at the bottom of the hill. Consequently, hard luck stories are common.
Gary Moore and Gerard Butler enjoy a particularly impressive strike rate, while no one rides this track better than the astute Eddie Ahern.

Although well-known during the winter for its all-weather fixtures, Lingfield stages a valuable jumps fixture of it’s own — this year on 9 December — when the two features are the three-mile December Novices’ Chase and the Summit Junior Hurdle. The track itself follows the same line as the flat course, with runners making a steady climb to the top of the hill before descending into the straight. Chases here often develop into a sprint as jockeys take a pull at the top of the hill and then quicken off the home turn
