Thanks to the vision of the late Sir Stanley Clarke, Uttoxeter has improved the quality of its racing more than any other course in the last 15 years. The course now hosts some decent contests — including the Midlands’ National in March — as well as being a popular venue amongst trainers looking to introduce novices to the game. A front-runners track, the final open ditch — three out — takes some jumping as runners are almost head-on to the stands. Uttoxeter is a good place to look out for horses that are not put off by the intimate atmosphere. With the stands close to the track and the inside of the course also popular, the run-in can be similar to a mini-Festival and horses which put their heads down here often run well at the big meetings too.
