FOINAVON (1967)
Ridden by journeyman jockey John Buckingham, the 100/1 outsider was a distance off the pace when a pile up of loose horses occured at the fence after Becher's Brook on the second circuit. Among all the confusion, his rider picked a path through the chaos.

RED RUM (1973)
It is still regarded as the greatest National of all time. Brilliant front-runner Crisp bounded over Aintree's fences in a breathtaking style and had everything - bar one horse - beaten as early as the Canal Turn. But that horse was Red Rum, who never gave up.

ALDANITI (1981)
The ultimate National fairytale. Aldaniti and rider Bob Champion both had their futures in grave doubt but battled through illness to score an amazing triumph in the 1981 National.

CORBIERE (1983)
Jenny Pitman became the first female trainer to win the Grand National when sending out Corbiere to score under Ben De Haan, scoring at 13/1 by a rapidly diminishing margin from Irish-trained Greasepaint.

MR FRISK (1990)
Firm ground saw the Grand National course record smashed by an incredible 14 seconds as Mr Frisk gave amateur rider Marcus Armytage a memorable triumph in the National from Aintree regular Durham Edition.

PARTY POLITICS (1992)
Could there have been a more appropriate winner of the National in General Election week than Party Politics? The Nick Gaselee-trained eight-year-old was almost too big for a National horse, but rider Carl Llewellyn produced a brilliant performance to hold his horse together until the elbow to score a popular victory.

Abandoned on the Saturday due to an IRA bomb threat, the rescheduled Monday National produced a race to remember as the Sir Stanley Clarke-owned Lord Gyllene came home ahead of popular grey Suny Grey to record an impressive win under Tony Dobbin.

RED MARAUDER (2001)
With the jump racing calendar almost wiped out due to the Foot & Mouth outbreak punters were desperate for a great National and in 2001 the big race delivered again. For the first time since the 1920s, just two runners completed the course without parting company with their riders.

AMBERLEIGH HOUSE (2004)
Almost 30 years since his great Red Rum ruled the Aintree roost, Donald McCain did the trick again as he produced Amberleigh House to take a last gasp victory in the National and provide him with an incredible fourth win in the race.
