Runner-up both starts over hurdles in France and couldn't have been more impressive when making a winning debut for Willie Mullins in December. This is much tougher but she's clearly a smart prospect.

Verdict

A high-class renewal and marginal preference is for an Irish raider, but probably not the one that most would think. SALDIER, the mount of 2016 Grand National-winning jockey David Mullins, was all the rage heading into his hurdles debut at Gowran Park and certainly didn't disappoint, beating his closest rival by an impressive 10-length margin. He showed an ability to power through bottomless ground that day and, although he lacks hurdling experience, he should be streetwise enough having had plenty of runs on the Flat in France. His stable have two other strong chances with runaway Fairyhouse scorer Stormy Ireland and Grade 1 winner Mr Adjudicator, but home challenger Apple's Shakira rates the biggest threat. Nicky Henderson's filly has won all three hurdle starts at this track, loves soft conditions and won't give up her unbeaten record without a fight. Redicean and Farclas, who wears a first-time tongue-tie, add further spice to the contest.

Verdict

This looks a cracking renewal with a whole host arriving with unbeaten records to protect. Chief amongst them, APPLE'S SHAKIRA has landed 3 small-field contests, latterly the Triumph Hurdle Trial, but there has been plenty to like about the manner of her victories and she can come out on top with further progress anticipated. Adonis-winner Redicean is feared though, along with Stormy Ireland.

Looked a smart prospect when scoring on hurdling debut at Ascot in December 2015. Lightly raced and disappointing since, so readily opposed from miles out of the weights.

Looked a smart prospect when scoring on hurdling debut at Ascot in December 2015. Lightly raced and disappointing since, so readily opposed from miles out of the weights.

Verdict

BLEU ET ROUGE's chasing campaign may have been one of disappointment last term but he will have gone into notebooks aplenty for his Betfair Hurdle second behind Kalashnikov last time. The winner boosted the form by running a big race in defeat when second in the Supreme on Tuesday and, with slow ground known to suit, he could remain competitive despite an 8lb rise. Spiritofthegames was third behind the selection at Newbury and has place possibilities, though bigger dangers may be unexposed Grade 3 winner Sandsend, Duca De Thaix, who is fitted with a first-time tongue-tie and commands respect under Jack Kennedy, and Whiskey Sour, a Grade 1 winner at Leopardstown who lost little in defeat when fourth behind Samcro latest. Drying ground would bring last year's Fred Winter winner Flying Tiger as well as Chesterfield and Ivanovich Gorbatov into the equation. Chesterfield is nicely treated on his victory in last year's Scottish Champion Hurdle while the latter, the 2016 Triumph winner, has slipped to a workable mark too.

Verdict

FLYING TIGER won the Fred Winter last year, and has been far from disgraced in small-field contests this season. He can up his game in this big-field/strong pace scenario and his mark could be lenient. Smaoineamh Alainn may well go slightly under the radar given her connections but she's promising, with Bleu Et Rouge perhaps the pick of the Irish.

Verdict

Nicky Henderson has a strong hand in this contest with CHEF DES OBEAUX, Santini, Mr Whipped and Ok Corral, and preference is for the former despite his four-length defeat to Santini earlier in the season. He has the experience needed for such a brutal race, while his love of soft ground is another positive. Enniscoffey Oscar impressed when winning a trial at Doncaster in January and provides the double-handed Emma Lavelle with a strong hand, while similar sentiments apply to Poetic Rhythm, who battled well to land the Challow at Newbury in December. Calett Mad returned to form after a change of tactics at Musselburgh last time and completes the shortlist.

Verdict

Plenty in here with claims. CHRIS'S DREAM found a chunk of improvement to make a winning yard debut in a Clonmel Grade 3 last month, a race his handler's Monalee took prior to a fine second in this race 12 months ago. There is no doubt Nicky Henderson holds a strong hand though, with Santini and Chef des Obeaux both highly respected. Enniscoffey Oscar is also in with a shout at a bigger price.
