Fairly useful form in bumpers. Left Christian Williams/off 10 weeks, well held in Champion Bumper at Cheltenham on final outing. Off 7 months. Makes hurdles debut.

Verdict

It is interesting that Nicky Henderson sends the well-thought-of Pym out nice and early in the jumps season having been tenderly handled by the Seven Barrows master so far. He remains an exciting prospect despite a few defeats in bumpers last season, but Henderson's inmates occasionally need their first outing of the season which tempers enthusiasm, therefore the preference is for DEYRANN DE CARJAC. Alan King's five-year-old was a 20-length winner at Warwick back in May when getting off the mark over timber, and his earlier hurdles appearances, including a third to Kalashnikov on his debut over obstacles at Doncaster, look smart pieces of form. Volcano was well regarded when with Christian Williams and despite seeing the form of his Exeter bumper win reversed by Acey Milan in a Cheltenham Listed race, as well as being beaten out of sight in the Champion Bumper, the young grey should have more to come now hurdling and a return to better ground is a positive. Philip Hobbs has his string in good order and his Warwick bumper winner Umndeni is worthy of a place on the shortlist having beaten the useful Morning Vicar on that first racecourse sighting.

Verdict

PYM showed useful form in bumpers last season and is taken to make a winning start in this sphere (same connections introduced Altior in this in 2015). Umndeni looked a good prospect when winning a 17-runner bumper at Warwick in April and is feared most ahead of penalised novice winner Deyrann de Carjac.

Showed plenty of ability in bumpers last season despite not looking entirely straightforward. Supremely Lucky is the choice of Harry Skelton, though.

Verdict

Lord Duveen was fifth behind two subsequent Grade 1 winners on his hurdles debut last winter and, having only raced twice over timber last term, the Doyen gelding could have more to come this season with his trainer-jockey combination firing on all cylinders at present. Colin Tizzard's string are normally primed for this meeting and any market support for his Jeremy newcomer, Reserve Tank, must be respected, while Baddesley Knight was a useful bumper performer last season and progress is likely. However, preference is for SUPREMELY LUCKY, who appears the pick of the Dan Skelton duo and landed a bumper here on his first appearance for the yard in February. The stable are not noted for their bumper winners, so it would be no surprise if the six-year-old, who showed some likeable qualities during that appearance, has plenty more to come now hurdling.

Verdict

LORD DUVEEN sets the bar pretty high and could be hard to beat given he’s open to a fair amount of improvement. However, Baddesley Knight, Supremely Lucky and Benny’s Bridge are interesting recruits to hurdling.

Verdict

Paul Nicholls won this last season with If You Say Run, and the same owners are represented here by Listed bumper winner POSH TRISH, who remains a top-class prospect despite her season petering out in the spring. She has always been talked of as one to note when jumping obstacles and having accounted for Grade 2 winner Getaway Katie Mai in a bumper, it would be no surprise to see her as a leading performer in this sphere this season. Definitelyanoscar was only beaten half a length in a competitive Cheltenham bumper in the spring and only looks set to improve as she steps up in distance, with Empreinte Reconce more than capable of building on her Newton Abbott victory in the summer and can't be discounted here. Jockey bookings suggest Festival Dawn is the pick of the Philip Hobbs-trained duo, while Meep Meep wasn't beaten far when fourth in Aintree's Grade 2 mares' bumper at the Grand National meeting and must be taken very seriously.

Verdict

A race that looks sure to throw up plenty of winners with a chance taken on MEEP MEEP. A winner of a bumper here in March, she improved when fourth in an Aintree Grade 2 in April, looking all about stamina, and this sort of test should play to her strengths now hurdling. Festival Dawn has hurdles experience and is feared, ahead of Definitelyanoscar, Midnightreferendum and Empreinte Reconce.

Useful hurdler who ran well on some top handicaps last season. Won Irish maiden point on debut so should take to this sphere.

Verdict

Monbeg Legend has amassed some decent chasing experience over the summer months and arrives on the back of a solid handicap success at Stratford. That said, he now faces potential Graded chase opponents making their debuts over the larger obstacles in the shape of Poetic Rhythm, a Grade 1 winner of the Challow Hurdle at Newbury, and the unbeaten MASTER TOMMYTUCKER. The former seems to be at his best in the early part of the season so is likely to be ready to do himself justice, but the latter has a lot of untapped potential having gone unbeaten in two novice hurdles at Exeter last season. The form of his April success was backed up by the runner-up and he is in the right hands to go to the very top over fences.

Verdict

MONBEG LEGEND is progressing well over fences and can put his experience to good use up against exciting chasing debutants Spiritofthegames, Poetic Rhythm and Master Tommytucker.

Not seen to best in effect in handicaps after his Ludlow win in January, but shrewd yard likely to have him spot on for this and must enter calculations. Had wind operation/wears first-time blinkers.

Verdict

Alan King has two interesting runners who both possess similar profiles in Ballywood and Nayati. The pair disappointed on their most recent starts but it is likely they both were feeling the effects of a long campaign having come over from France after several outings in their native country. Cubswin has race-fitness on his side and has run some decent races in defeat of late, including when placed in the Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen, but the vote goes to COMRADE CONRAD. Gelded since his last start at Ayr in April, Dan Skelton has also given him a wind operation and fitted first-time blinkers which could all lead to an improved performance.

Verdict

KNIGHT DESTROYER boasts a good record on the Flat at this venue and hasn't really had a chance to show what he can do in handicaps over hurdles as yet. He gets the vote in a tricky-looking contest. Grand Saucy and Comrade Conrad have both undergone wind operations since last seen on the track and could prove most dangerous.

Verdict

Court Minstrel bids for his third success in the race, having won in 2015 and 12 months ago, but his form has tailed off drastically and he is now rated 11lb lower than last year, while the recent rain won't benefit his chance. Theclockisticking has some smart novice hurdle form to boast which links in with Captain Cattistock, with the pair both reaching a decent level at Cheltenham in April behind Diese Des Bieffes, and he is likely to come on for his first run of the season at Market Rasen. Captain Cattistock remains open to further improvement but it is possible he will need his first outing since April. A chance, however, is taken with SNEAKY FEELING, who proved very disappointing in two starts early last season, but it was well documented that the Philip Hobbs yard struggled with a virus so he remains of interest with a clean slate to start this campaign. Azzerti, Dans Le Vent, and Le Patriote are others all worthy of note.

Verdict

A typically competitive renewal of a long-established handicap hurdle. Narrow preference is for THECLOCKISTICKING, who has race fitness on his side having run well in a good event at Market Rasen a fortnight ago. Captain Cattistock represents Paul Nicholls and looks a fine prospect, while Dans Le Vent and Zalvados are others to consider for each-way purposes at likely bigger odds.

Took this event 12 months ago and improved on that form when chasing home Step Back in big-field handicap at Sandown (28.8f) last spring. 16 lb better off with the winner now and holds strong claims.

Has done well this summer, winning twice over hurdles before landing a brace of novice chases. Hasn't convinced with his fencing, though, and asked a big question here. Wears first-time cheekpieces.

Four-time winner over fences last season, including Warwick handicap off 6 lb lower mark. Should be straighter for last month's Uttoxeter return, although he is untested over this sort of trip.

Won 3 of his 6 starts over fences last term, and ended campaign with good fourth of 13 in handicap chase at Cheltenham (26f). Can go well fresh but only looks averagely treated on return.

Made a winning start for this yard at Kempton (24f) in February. Never sighted behind Step Back at Sandown in April but remains on a decent mark and yard likely to have aimed him at this prize.
