Fairly useful maiden on Flat (stays 1½m) for Jim Bolger. Poor form when remote fourth on Taunton hurdle bow last month but ought to improve with that experience behind her.

Verdict

MELANGERIE sets the form standard on her C&D novice hurdle victory last time out and although she's giving weight away here, with James Bowen keeping the ride and taking off a useful 5lb, she's expected to follow up to notch a double. Secret Escape was not knocked about when fourth in a Listed bumper at Cheltenham in November and now debuting over timber, she has place possibilities along with Uttoxeter third Rouergate and the consistent Passing Call.

Verdict

PASSING CALL has shaped well when runner-up on both starts over hurdles and gets the nod to go one better. Last month's C&D winner Melangerie is likely to give another good account of herself, while Secret Escape has done well in bumpers and is an interesting recruit to hurdles. Rouergate completes the shortlist.

Developed into a useful hurdler for this yard last season but not at that level when runner-up both starts over fences, posting a rather laboured effort at Exeter latterly.

Verdict

SHAAMA GRISE has posted two creditable efforts in defeat over 2m1f since sent chasing and is expected to build on those performances and gain a deserved victory now stepped up to this longer trip. Happy Diva lost little in defeat when second to a subsequent Listed winner at Newbury, while Copper Kay was a Listed winner herself in a bumper earlier in her career and is worth a market check now switched back to fences. Midnight Target would be surprise winner on these terms.

Verdict

HAPPY DIVA was runner-up in listed company last time and can get off the mark over fences with her sights lowered slightly. Midnight Target has taken very well to fences and could be the one to follow her home as useful hurdlers Shaama Grise and Copper Kay have yet to prove they are as good over the larger obstacles.

Useful handicap chaser at best for Mouse Morris in Ireland. Low-key start on belated return for new yard at Aintree last month but this should reveal more.

Verdict

ACTINPIECES was touched off by under a length when fourth in a tight finish to the Rowland Meyrick at Wetherby last time and is expected to take closer order now turned out off the same mark in this lower grade. Mystical Knight is entitled to step up on his reappearance effort at Bangor, while Sego Success makes some appeal on his Warwick second off 1lb higher in October and could also finish in the shake-up.

Verdict

ACTINPIECES is still on the upgrade judge on her efforts over fences this season, a close fourth in a Grade 3 handicap at Wetherby last time, and is taken to defy top weight back down in class. Aubusson has had excuses so far this season and is a potential threat off a handy-looking mark.

Multiplex gelding. Half-brother to fair hurdler/useful chaser Goodtoknow. Dam (h112) 21f-3m winner (stayed 3½m). Bred for stamina and probably best watched on belated debut.

Verdict

Nicky Henderson saddles two interesting five-year-olds here in Darius Des Bois and No Hiding Place with the latter potentially best placed to take this and he is the mount of Nico De Boinville. Donald McCain is another handler with two charges and both Spin The Coin and Ofcourseiwill can go well at long odds. However, preference is for JERSEY BEAN who was blindsided at the first when unseating last time and can go well here with a repeat of his Ascot bumper win back in the Autumn. Luckime has been well held so far but has plenty of potential for when the penny finally drops, while Richard Mitford-Slade has been making a name for himself in his opening season training and despite his point-to-point/hunter chase form not looking the most convincing, it would be foolish to rule out his Master Tradesman.

Verdict

LYGON ROCK and Gortroe Joe set a clear standard and are probably the pair to focus on. The former is arguably open to more improvement so gets the nod. Jersey Bean looks best of the rest.

Pulled up in a point last month and this looks too hot even if returning to his game back in a hunter.

Verdict

VIRAK has mixed it in Graded company throughout his career and could have too much class for his rivals here now dropping into the hunter chase ranks. Mendip Express and his pilot David Maxwell are a standing dish in these contests and he is a consistent figure in this sphere, while Wild Bill has claimed some notable scalps in the pointing field over the years, but will need to leave his Christmas reappearance in the past.

Verdict

VIRAK was largely disappointing in a light 2016/17 campaign, but he's a very classy recruit to this sphere and connections will be keen to get him qualified for the Cheltenham Festival without too much difficulty. He has to be the call in receipt of weight from main rivals Mendip Express and Now Ben.

Did shape as if retaining some ability when last seen under Rules at Stratford in May 2016 for Tim Bryce. Placed in a couple points last year but best watched on yard debut.

Verdict

Crucial Role arrives here having finished second on his handicap debut late last month and the step up in trip could bring about some improvement in the son of Westerner. That said, the preference is for THE SWEENEY, whose performances in novice/maiden hurdles suggest that he may be underestimated by a mark of 114. Others to consider are Pennywell, Three Star General and Vinegar Hill.

Verdict

GAMAIN travelled with real purpose for a long way when a good third in a big field over C&D last week and could be the way to go if this doesn't come too quicky for him. Pennywell arrives in form and is feared under Richard Johnson, while The Sweeney is a likely improver now handicapping over a longer trip.
