Landed back-to-back novice hurdles last term and left chase debut effort behind when runner-up at Chepstow in December. One to beat on that run, but jumping has been an issue since.

Verdict

ABBREVIATE turned in a much improved effort when beaten into second over the extended 2m7f at Huntingdon last time and is expected to step up on that performance now upped in trip. Cadeau Du Bresil hasn't looked at ease over fences on three outings previously so the main danger to the selection may be Nigel Twiston-Davies representative Scotchtown, who makes some appeal on his Chepstow second in a handicap back in December.

Verdict

This should be a straight fight between ABBREVIATE and Scotchtown, with marginal preference for the former given the latter has been throwing in mistakes over the larger obstacles.

Cemented sound start to season when landing handicap at Leicester (15.5f) in January. Struggled from inflated mark thereafter and chasing experiment quickly overlooked.

Verdict

Walsingham Grange returned a beaten favourite when fifth at Huntingdon last time and may be able to step up on that effort now fitted with a first-time visor, though of more interest is CELESTIAL MAGIC. Richard Phillips' six-year-old has been dropped in the ratings for turning in a disappointing display at Uttoxeter last time and is back on the same mark he won this race off 12 months ago. Commodore is worth a market check too now moving into a handicap.

Verdict

It could be worth chancing last year's winner CELESTIAL MAGIC. The 6-y-o didn't shape too badly when fourth at Uttoxeter on his most recent start and has now fallen to his last winning mark. Likely improver Lissycasey and Walsingham Grange, equipped with a visor, are a couple of others to consider.

In the frame all 5 starts this season for his new yard, typically plugging on at Warwick last month. Not easy to win with, but firmly at home under these conditions.

Verdict

Allthegear No Idea rattled the crossbar at Lingfield last time and may be able to improve in first-time cheekpieces. Narrow preference, however, is for MORE THAN LUCK, who is expected to step up on his latest effort over fences now switching back to hurdles. He's only 3lb higher than when winning at Fakenham in January and newly fitted blinkers here may help. Triopas won over C&D last year and is no forlorn hope for a place.

Verdict

JULLY LEX BUXY showed a willing attitude when making a successful reappearance/stable debut at Plumpton in January and has done enough both starts since to suggest she remains in good order. She could be the answer in an open race, with Allthegear No Idea and American Life heading the opposition.

Poor maiden chaser and looks set for another struggle from out of the weights.

Verdict

HOW'S MY FRIEND arrives here chasing a course three-timer and the admirable 13-year-old looks tough to oppose in this company. A further 3lb rise doesn't look too harsh and Grant Cann's charge can get the better of Call Carlo, who has gone well the last twice and looks a typical gutsy type for Venetia Williams. Over My Head has plenty of ground to make up on the selection, while Alberto's Dream would be interesting if running here after completing a hat-trick at Huntingdon yesterday.

Verdict

ALBERTO'S DREAM has clearly been revived by a change of scenery, winning his last 2 starts with ease, and looks capable of defying another penalty. Call Carlo is very low mileage for his age and is feared most having done well in handicap chases.

Verdict

LONGHOUSESIGNORA shaped much better on her second try over hurdles at Taunton three weeks ago and Venetia Williams' charge looks poised to take another big step forward here. The six-year-old wasn't disgraced in what looked to be a hot event there and could account for Oscar Star, who is a consistent sort and has recently had a wind operation. City Star represents a powerful yard and needs a betting check, while similar comments apply to With Discretion.

Verdict

This is a rather belated debut under Rules for With Discretion but she represents top connections so is a very likely player. Bee Crossing and Oscar Star have achieved the most over hurdles so far and are others to consider.

Losing run dates back to April 2016 and having ended time with Matt Sheppard out of sorts, he has continued in that vein for current yard. Well weighted if he does find form.

Yet to make an impact over hurdles and likely set for another struggle here.

Yet to make an impact over hurdles and likely set for another struggle here.

Verdict

SHEELBEWHATSHEELBE remains unexposed over this sort of distance and looks poised to appreciate a return to this venue after toiling at Plumpton last time out off 1lb higher. Mitchell Bastyan is one of the better conditional riders on the circuit and takes the ride this time, while the return to softer going is another positive. Whispering Harry drops in class and could go well, while Jasani needs a market check after a 723-day absence.

Verdict

It is possible the sharper track caught out SHEELBEWHATSHEELBE at Plumpton last time, plugging on for fourth. However, she had previously shown real tenacity to score over C&D and is probably worth another chance. Bisoubisou and the returning Jasani rate next best, in a pretty tricky affair.

Struggled for a long time under Rules, but a couple of point wins in more recent times suggest he retains some ability (unseated rider last time).

Verdict

HAZEL HILL landed the odds with ease at Leicester in this discipline last month after multiple wins between the flags and looks to have been found another decent opening here by Phillip Rowley to strike. Crowded Room hasn't been seen under Rules for a year but does arrive here fit after a recent point-to-point spin, while Sobre Tresor has a point to prove after a poor run between the flags 25 days ago. Strollawaynow is also noted.

Verdict

HAZEL HILL was backed as though defeat was out of the question on Rules debut at Leicester (arrived on the back of a long winning sequence between the flags) last month and he duly obliged in stylish fashion. He's expected to land the odds again without too much trouble, with Crowded Room offered for the forecast.
