Brother to same yard's useful hurdler/smart chaser Le Prezien and looked a good prospect when landing odds in bumper at Chepstow in October. Likely to have won but for a final-flight fall last month.

Verdict

MONT DES AVALOIRS looked to have the race at his mercy when falling at the last at Wincanton four weeks ago and could take advantage of receiving weight all round here if completely over the exertions of that tumble. The Last Day impressed when winning easily at Chepstow and cannot be underestimated, while Midnight Shadow sets the form standard having won once and finished second in a Listed contest since switching to hurdling.

Verdict

A trio of useful novice hurdlers in the making, with MONT DES AVALOIRS selected to gain compensation for an unlucky fall last month as on the plus side he gets 6 lb from his rivals as a result. The Last Day looked a natural over obstacles at Chepstow and may give the selection most to think about.

Showed a good attitude to complete the hat-trick at Carlisle (17f) in October. Unseated his rider back over fences last time, and in better company now but he’s tough and likely to continue in form.

Verdict

Play The Ace could be hard to stop in search of a four-timer and Peter Bowen's chaser has been in fine form this autumn. However, he has to concede 8lb to Evan Williams' progressive six-year-old SWIFT CRUSADOR, who wasn't far away on his chase bow and should be able to make his mark over fences sooner rather than later. Katachenko wasn't at his best last season, but often goes well here and can't be dismissed, while Barrys Jack had racked up a three-timer before coming to grief at Sedgefield and could be well treated based on his achievements of late.

Verdict

BALLYHILL looks destined to be better as a chaser than he was as a hurdler, and is worth another chance to prove that from a handy mark. Swift Crusador will be winning races over fences sooner rather than later, while Katachenko is capable on his day and shouldn’t be ruled out for an in-form yard.

Still on the up judged by fine second over extended 3m here in October. Re-united with regular pilot and another who cannot be dismissed in a competitive small-field affair.

Verdict

A small field but competitive event with the preference going to BLACK IVORY, who was only narrowly denied in a 3m race here in October. The drop in trip should not be a problem and may even help given how soft the ground is likely to be. Le Breuil looked to have a very bright future when winning twice last season and he could bounce back from two moderate efforts. Neither of Alphabetical Order or Cool Sky can be discounted but the former is the marginal pick of that pair.

Verdict

This looks competitive despite the small field with LE BREUIL narrowly favoured. Ben Pauling's charge looked an exciting prospect last term and, with his reappearance under his belt, he could well prove difficult to peg back. Black Ivory is next best ahead of Alphabetical Order.

Useful chaser at his peak for Enda Bolger. Mixed record for this yard but cashed in off reduced mark in tenacious fashion at Kelso (21.6f) last month. Yard going well but this a whole lot tougher.

Verdict

Nigel Twiston-Davies has a fantastic record in the Becher Chase having won it no less than five times since the inception of this contest back in 1992 and Blaklion looks to fit the bill as a leading contender. A former RSA Chaser winner like Young Hustler (1995) was for the yard, he is a very sound jumper and showed an excellent aptitude for the task when fourth in the Grand National in the spring. The drop back down in trip looks in his favour. Similar comments apply to last year's winner VIEUX LION ROUGE and the pair met in the Charlie Hall Chase when the former was narrowly denied by stablemate Bristol De Mai. Despite David Pipe's gelding finishing fourth, beaten 44 lengths, on that occasion, he shaped as though there would be significant improvement for the outing and, despite being 10lb higher than last year, has form beating Blaklion when winning the Grand National Trial at Haydock which suggests he is still improving. He was a non-stayer again when sixth in the National but he has everything in his favour here which includes testing conditions. Highland Lodge found the National too hot to handle but his record since joining Jimmy Moffatt in this race reads a win and a second, when he arguably should have won having stopped on the run-in. He rates a very solid each-way contender along with last year's third and 2016 Grand National runner-up The Last Samuri, Goodtoknow, who has conditions to suit, and As De Mee.

Verdict

BLAKLION performed consistently well in good company last term, culminating with a solid fourth in the Grand National. His excellent second in the Charlie Hall Chase on return has been well and truly boosted since and he looks sure to go well. The Last Samuri ran a cracker on his respective hurdles return and is feared, with previous winners Highland Lodge and Vieux Lion Rouge also respected.

Modest AW performer for Mark Johnston but promises to do better in this sphere judged on her opening second to Hillcrest Fire. No reason why she will reverse that form, though.

Verdict

Malaya clearly possesses an engine but is likely to be short enough given the amount of jumping errors she made at Wetherby, while Grey Waters looks a nice dual purpose type for Joseph O'Brien and is 2-2 under this talented 3lb claimer. Preference, however, is for HILLCREST FIRE, who created quite an impression when landing the odds at Leicester three weeks ago. Her trainer thinks that better company will see her in a better light and she could prove tough to pass if allowed an easy lead in these conditions.

Verdict

MALAYA probably has her limitations in this division, but she has already garnered plenty of experience over hurdles and has tasted success in listed company on both sides of the Channel. She sets a solid standard, with Hillcrest Fire and Grey Waters the obvious dangers.

Smart chaser who added to his Warwick Grade 2 success with gutsy win in 20f Grade 1 here in April. Back to somewhere near that level when fourth in Ascot Grade 2 a fortnight ago. Up in trip.

Verdict

Cloudy Dream (second) and Flying Angel (first) are closely matched on their Grade 1 encounter over 2m4f here in April and both are unexposed around 3m. There could feasibly be more improvement to come from both now upped in trip, while Alpha Des Obeaux, with solid staying form in the book, when runner-up to Thistlecrack in the 2016 World Hurdle and when second in the Munster National recently, could also take a hand. However, the one who ticks most boxes is DEFINITLY RED. He was unfortunate in the Grand National when having to be pulled up after his saddle slipped as he swerved a faller and although he needs to build on his comeback third in the Charlie Hall, when he looked in need of the run, he has conditions in his favour and is expected to bounce back. He stays this trip and beyond and may well try and make all.

Verdict

DEFINITLY RED should be all the better with his reappearance behind him and can show he's capable of winning outside of handicap company. Cloudy Dream is a huge threat on form but his stamina is a worry, even in a small field, and recent Grade 2 scorer Alpha Des Obeaux could be the one to give Brian Ellison's charge most to do.

Did well last season, winning 3 times, though below par both starts this term and blinkers refitted.

Verdict

Paul Nicholls has won two of the last four renewals and looks to have very solid claims once again with Sametegal, who shaped with considerable promise after a lengthy absence when runner-up to Guitar Pete at Wetherby last month. He is still relatively unexposed over fences and may have further improvement to come. Mercian Prince ran really well on his return at Stratford behind Starchitect when showing his credentials for a race of this nature by jumping boldly throughout before getting tired. That form received a fair boost with the winner going on to be runner-up in the BetVictor Gold Cup at Cheltenham and he has shown himself to be versatile regarding ground conditions. Arctic Gold and Captain Redbeard were placed behind Cyrus Darius at Ayr and both warrant respect on that effort but GAS LINE BOY would arguably have won a veterans race here in October were it not for the low sun causing him to fall three out. The winner of that race The Romford Pele has come out and won since so the form looks fairly solid and the drop back in trip on testing ground could just suit this front-runner perfectly.

Verdict

GAS LINE BOY is proven over these obstacles having finished fifth in the Grand National in April and would have gone close to making a winning return on the Mildmay Course had he not fallen 3 out, so looks a solid option. Mercian Prince and Captain Redbeard both shaped well on their return and they head the dangers.
