Promising individual. 16/1, fourth of 6 in maiden at Dundalk (6f) on debut 25 days ago. Open to progress.

Verdict

NATIONAL GUARD displayed some encouraging signs when finishing fifth on his debut at Cork recently and that performance suggested the experience would not be lost on him. If the son of War Front does take a step forward, he will be hard to beat. That said, North Wind and Vidiyni have similar profiles and cannot be discounted, while Indigo Balance and Erich Bloch are two very interesting newcomers.

Verdict

It looks significant that Ryan Moore partners newcomer CARDINI ahead of stablemates National Guard and North Wind, both of whom arrive here on the back of promising debuts. The case for Cardini will be all the more compelling if there's confidence behind him in the betting and he may well lead home a Ballydoyle 1-2-3. Vidiyni shaped well on his introduction at Dundalk is best of the rest.

Not disgraced when fourth in this 12 months ago and returned to form when chasing Cliffs of Moher home at Naas last time. However, no real reason to believe he'll turn the tables on that rival here.

Verdict

Epsom Derby second Cliffs Of Moher got back to winning ways when getting the better of Success Days in a Naas Group Two earlier this month, and the Galileo colt holds major claims if able to build on that triumph. Ballydoyle stablemate Lancaster Bomber is sure to run his usual solid race. However, this offers the perfect opportunity for DEFOE to land a first Group One triumph having won seven of his 10 outings so far, and looking as good as ever in his two appearances this season.

Verdict

British raiders have landed 4 of the last 5 renewals of this prestigious race and DEFOE is taken to uphold that recent tradition. Roger Varian's charge is clearly still progressing judged on his victories at Newbury and Newmarket this season and he is marginally preferred to Cliffs of Moher. Ballydoyle second-strong Lancaster Bomber can claim minor place money.

Verdict

Joseph O'Brien holds a strong hand, particularly with Dundalk winner Ming and twice runner-up LATROBE. Preference is for the latter as his form seems very solid and his second to Hunting Horn reads well with the winner having not disgraced himself in Derby trials in the UK. The son of Camelot also looks open to improvement for tackling a sounder surface for the first time. Platinum Warrior arrives on the back of a career best having finished fourth to Hazapour in the Derrinstown, and is respected on that effort. Harvestfortheworld has more to offer up in trip having run well in the 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown.

Verdict

This looks ripe for PLATINUM WARRIOR, who was a fine fourth in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial last time and he remains open to improvement over this trip. Harvestfortheworld wasn't beaten far in the Leopardstown 1000 Guineas Trial and will be a threat if this stiffer test proves suitable. Sarrocchi could be the pick of the Aidan O'Brien-trained trio, for all that Ryan Moore prefers Conclusion.

Verdict

ALLEGIO followed up his distance victory at Cork with another winning performance over the extended 1m at the same venue last time. He was eased down that day, finishing 33 lengths ahead of Aussie Valentine, who has been a model of consistency for his new stable and reopposes here. Despite a 13lb hike in the ratings, the thriving selection is expected to remain competitive. Spruce Meadows has been knocking on the door and has solid each-way claims, while recent Dundalk winner Claregate Street also commands respect.

Verdict

Preference is for WOOSTER, who has done nothing wrong since joining this yard and probably would've won at Leopardstown last time but for experiencing traffic problems. Espoir D'Soleil misfired at Navan when last seen in October but she was progressive prior to that and may have more to offer this year. Spruce Meadows also has claims.

Successful twice as a juvenile and solid reappearance effort when second to Who's Steph at Leopardstown. However, disappointing behind Lightening Quick at Naas since and she looks up against it.

Verdict

Aidan O'Brien has a typically strong hand for this and saddles the only two previous Group 1 winners in the field. Clemmie looked to have the world at her feet when landing the Cheveley Park in the manner of a filly who would relish further than that 6f test. She has to be respected, but stablemate HAPPILY has the benefit of a recent run, having finished ahead of Soliloquy when filling third in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. A dual Group 1 winner last term, she is likely to improve for that reappearance outing, as so many of O'Brien's horses do. Lightening Quick brushed aside Yulong Gold Fairy when landing a Naas Group 3 and is respected, while Who's Steph is improving quickly and could be a factor if continuing that progression.

Verdict

If the positive tactics which served her so well in the Nell Gwyn are again employed, SOLILOQUY could take some stopping. She clearly wasn't the same force under a more patient ride in the 1000 Guineas yet, to her credit, was only beaten around 3 lengths. Happily was ahead of Soliloquy at Newmarket but arguably lacks the scope of the Godolphin filly and stablemate Clemmie could be a bigger threat.
