Verdict

WHATAKNIGHT was never travelling when pitched into Grade 2 company in the mud in the Cleeve last time, though it is possible he can take a forward step now encountering better ground. He makes some appeal on his comfortable Haydock victory over a similar trip in May. Arthurs Secret is a model of consistency and is unlikely to be far away, while C&D winner The Organist is worth a market check on his return from a spell chasing.

Verdict

MARKOV, a winning pointer who ground out a bumper success on Rules debut, has left the firm impression that he's a strong stayer in 3 hurdles outings to date, so the expectation is that he takes a marked step forward now upped in trip for his handicap debut. Big runs seem assured from Whataknight and Arthurs Secret, but the selection is much more unexposed.

Dual hurdles winner who returned to form when opening his chase account at Newbury. Fell next time but quickly bounced back when close third of 3 at Leicester.

Verdict

Katgary looked progressive over the summer for the change of stables to Pauline Robson, winning well on his second start for the Northumberland-based handler. He might need this outing and an 8lb rise for that victory won't make life easy for the seven-year-old. Bright New Dawn has been slightly disappointing for Venetia Williams so far but remains well handicapped, though he isn't one to fully trust in his current mood and SAN BENEDETO looks to be the one. Paul Nicholls' charge is suited by flat tracks and he could defy a mark of 145 in this winnable event.

Verdict

None of these can be ruled out but The Grey Taylor is on a fair mark and could be worth chancing fresh from a break. San Benedeto and Theatre Flame are feared most.

Useful on the Flat (stays 21f) and stepped up on reappearance/hurdles debut when runner-up (in first-time cheekpieces) at Exeter last month. Ought to stay this far judged on exploits on the level.

Verdict

Apart from Avithos, who has plenty to find on figures, this looks a competitive even on paper with the rest of the field all holding solid claims in their own right. Happy Diva sets the standard on form having finished fourth to Constantine Bay over C&D in a Grade 2 in January before finding the smart Colin's Sister too strong when dropped back in trip at Sandown last time. The return to 3m is a positive but a chance can be taken with LASTBUTNOTLEAST, a mare who is unbeaten in two outings over hurdles and showed a fantastic attitude at Carlisle when seeing off Which One Is Which. Taws was arguably flattered when second behind Finian's Oscar at Exeter but should benefit for the extra mile, while Braventara and Naranja both cannot be discounted having both shown ability to date.

Verdict

LASTBUTNOTLEAST is an uncomplicated and likeable mare with an unbeaten record over hurdles, and it may well stay that way after this. Happy Diva seems sure to give a good account, while the likes of Taws and Naranja can improve for this trip as they chase valuable Black Type.

Improved on his jumping when running out a 13-length winner at Kelso last May, and seemed to excel himself in 3m Sky Bet Chase on return in January. Step back up in trip will suit, but is 5 Ib higher.

Verdict

The Last Samuri romped home by 10 lengths in this race 12 months ago, jumping boldly up with the pace and scoring in sufficient style to be officially 12lb well-in for the Grand National on his next start. He ran superbly at Aintree, too, landing the silver medal, and now the weights are out of this year's contest, he's finalising his preparations here with a final spin. However, Kim Bailey's charge, who finished a solid third in the Becher on his second run back from a break, has edged up another 2lb in defeat and may be vulnerable to DEFINITLY RED, to whom he concedes 12lb. The Brian Ellison-trained selection was impressive in the Rowland Meyrick when leading home Wakanda and can be forgiven his last run, when impeded by a falling rival in the Peter Marsh. Sky Bet Chase third Looking Well continues on an upward curve and could also take a hand.

Verdict

DEFINITLY RED recorded a smart performance when putting a couple of these to the sword at Wetherby in December and he is taken to put a lesser effort at Haydock since behind him and resume his progress. The Last Samuri is 12 Ib higher in the weights than when winning this last year, but this thoroughly-likeable, and generally-progressive stayer looks sure to make another bold bid.

Verdict

THUMB STONE BLUES looks to set the standard on form achieved so far over timber and will have no issue with the likely ground conditions due to a fair amount of rain hitting Doncaster over the past 24 hours. Boagrius was somewhat disappointing on his hurdles debut at Ludlow but is entitled to improve from that effort, while Be Daring merits consideration as he looks the type that has needed plenty of time to develop.

Verdict

BOAGRIUS, a winner on his only start in bumpers, took well to hurdling and looked the most likely winner before tiring late on at Ludlow in January. The slight ease in trip may help on that evidence and he shades the vote. Thumb Stone Blues rates as the main threat, with Be Daring next best on seasonal bow.

Modest at best in bumpers and, while he offered a bit more when sixth in a C&D novice last month, it has had an adverse effect on his opening mark.

Verdict

The in-and-out Danceintothelight will probably be allowed dictate matters and that could spell danger to his rivals if on a going day, while Honey Pound struggled to go through the mud at Lingfield but should be seen to much better effect on this quicker surface (touched off on similar ground at Leicester two starts ago). The lightly-weighted Today Please is also given a chance on his return from a break, but slight preference is for the top-rated HARTSIDE. He bounced right back to form at Carlisle recently, finishing a neck second, and a 5lb rise might not be enough to anchor him if arriving in the same mood.

Verdict

Not a convincing quintet, but DANCEINTOTHELIGHT may well be afforded his own way at the head of affairs, which tilts the balance in his favour. Hartside returned to form when just denied at Carlisle a fortnight ago and is feared most.

Mount Nelson half-brother to 3 winners, including fairly useful hurdler/fair chaser Dealing River. Dam 6f winner. Probably best watched unless market vibes strong.

Verdict

A cracking bumper on paper which should produce a high quality winner. Brecon Hill represents a stable that have been feared by bookmakers in this sphere for many years and he looks a smart sort judged on his debut win at Catterick. That form took a big boost when the third came out and bolted up recently and he should go very close again, but MARIA'S BENEFIT shades the verdict in receipt of 6lb. She confirmed ability shown between the flags when runner-up on her NH debut over this C&D - form which looks solid - and normal improvement will make her tough to beat. Easy Newcastle scorer Midnight Shadow also holds solid claims, while Echo Express, It's Your Move, Drums Of War and Go Go Lucas add further spice to the race.

Verdict

MARIA'S BENEFIT's C&D debut form looks strong and she should take a bit of stopping with improvement likely. Brecon Hill and Midnight Shadow looked decent prospects when winning on debut and could be the pair to give her most to think about.
