Point/dual bumper winner who made a promising start in this sphere back from 8 months off when second of 10 in novice at Carlisle (19.7f) last month. Excellent claims of going one better up in trip.

Verdict

Dual bumper scorer WINDSOR AVENUE is a well regarded gelding and his reputation was done no harm when runner-up first time over hurdles at Carlisle last month, finding only a smart Nigel Twiston-Davies inmate too good. He is entitled to improve for that first outing since February and will take an awful lot of beating stepping up three furlongs in trip. Sheriff Garrett wears cheekpieces for the first time in this code (has worn them twice to victory on the Flat) and looks clear second best, while Western Aussie showed promise between the flags before joining Martin Todhunter.

Verdict

Dual bumper winner WINDSOR AVENUE made a promising start over hurdles at Carlisle last month and has excellent claims of going one better now up in trip. Sheriff Garrett's merit is well established now, but he's still likely to pose the biggest threat.

Fair stayer on the Flat (creditable in-frame efforts at Pontefract last month). No significant impact in 3 previous outings over hurdles but she's likely to do better at some point.

Verdict

Mistiroc has five Flat victories under his belt and should go very close if taking to this game, but preference is for the proven NH form of WEATHER FRONT. He left his first effort in this sphere well behind when chasing home the smart Good Boy Bobby at Carlisle (pulling 17 lengths clear of the rest) and a repeat performance alone will make him difficult to beat here, although he is entitled to improve further. Wishing Well holds each-way claims switching back to hurdles after posting a couple of solid performances on the level last month.

Verdict

WEATHER FRONT has had a very productive time on the Flat this year and is likely to be winning over hurdles soon based on last month's Carlisle second. He's preferred to Mistiroc, who seemingly isn't the force of old on the Flat but should still be up to making his presence felt in a race like this now hurdling. Hitman Fred should strip fitter for his recent hurdle bow and is best of the rest.

Hurdles winner at Perth in 2017 but seen only 3 times since, well held after 11 months off when last seen in April. Should at least make a chaser given pointing background.

Verdict

GERONIMO struck the crossbar in each of his four starts over hurdles last season and, almost certain to improve for a switch to fences, he will mount a bold bid if anywhere near peak fitness on his return from a 207-day absence. River Icon warrants plenty of respect lining up off the same mark as when runner-up over 2m4f here in September and she is match-fit following two subsequent spins on the level, while Talkofgold and Militarian are others to note.

Verdict

GERONIMO has finished second on all 4 of his starts but is threatening to come good soon and is the type to make a chaser. The versatile River Icon is next best ahead of Militarian.

Poor maiden and easily passed over from 11 lb out of the handicap.

Verdict

MINELLA FIVEO was second to an improver at Carlisle before running below par at Southwell two weeks ago, but this looks a nice opportunity for Sue Smith's charge and a mark of 100 is still there to be taken advantage of. Hitchcock ran a big race at Wexford last time and is an interesting Irish raider, while Back To Balloo represents a trainer with a solid record here and he has Brian Hughes on board.

Verdict

MINELLA FIVEO bumped into an unusual one for the grade at Carlisle on his penultimate start and his subsequent run at Southwell wasn't as bad as the end result would suggest, so he looks the way to go. Credible opponents appear to be thin on the ground, but Back To Balloo and Irish-raider Hitchcock have something to recommend them.

Verdict

CORNER CREEK bounced back to winning form at Southwell four weeks ago, shaping like a strong stayer in the process, and could defy a 6lb rise here. Richard Patrick is one of the better conditional riders on the circuit and the pair look poised to go very well here off what remains a workable handicap mark. Attention Please was a pleasing second at Ayr last time but wouldn't want any further rain, while Dartford Warbler and Inchcolm are also respected.

Verdict

ARIZONA BOUND, a winner at Perth in August, got no further than the fourth at Kelso recently. However, he had previously shaped well when runner-up over C&D and he could be worth chancing to get back to winning ways. Dartford Warbler, Inchcolm and Corner Creek are a trio of others to consider, in a typically competitive affair.

Poor maiden handicap hurdler. This more realistic than the course maiden he tackled on last month's stable debut but others still preferred.

Verdict

ONLY ORVIETO looks fairly handicapped given her bumper form when trained by Ruth Jefferson and she could claim a first win over hurdles on her third start for Mark Walford. The seven-year-old stayed on well here five weeks ago and is sure to appreciate this sterner test of stamina. Strike West did it well at Carlisle when last seen in April and looks the potential improver in the field, while Chanceiton and veteran See Double You are also considered.

Verdict

It all came together for CHANCEITON at Kelso last time and he's taken to build on that and make light of a 5 lb rise. Top Billing showed he can do something off his reduced mark when third at Perth in the spring and should go well, while Dubh des Champs is a potential improver over this longer trip. Lawtop Legend completes the shortlist.
