Fair Flat performer at up to 12.5f and fit from some placed efforts on AW this winter. Coming to hurdling quite late in the day but is a half-sister to a fairly useful performer in this sphere.

Verdict

This looks a match on paper between recent C&D winner REIVERS LAD and Carlisle winner Viserion. Both bring a solid level of form to the contest but preference goes to the latter as he could not have been more impressive here just over a fortnight ago and is capable of better. The latter has improved with each outing over hurdles and is the clear threat on paper, while Slanelough looks best of the remainder on the evidence of his run behind Gaitway at Musselburgh.

Verdict

A good chance this will develop into a match between previous hurdles winners REIVERS LAD and Viserion. The former barely had to come off the bridle over C&D last time and can enhance his yard's excellent record here this season.

Verdict

UN PROPHETE was surprisingly turned over BY the enigmatic Champagne At Tara at Leicester on his latest start when sent off at odds on. However, he is more than capable of getting back to winning ways as he has the scope for further improvement compared to the majority of his rivals who appear to have reached their limit. Master Jake has his quirks but will likely be thereabouts, while Ash Park has a couple of decent pieces of form to boast and is a threat if running to his best.

Verdict

None of the quintet can be ruled out, but UN PROPHETE arguably has the most scope for improvement and can make it 3 wins from 4 starts over fences. The quirky Master Jake could be the one for the forecast if putting his best foot forward.

Smart dual bumper winner who is set to make just as good a hurdler, justifying very short odds with the minimum of fuss last time. Leading claims.

Verdict

MOUNT MEWS should be arriving here unbeaten having thrown away a race at Wetherby in January two starts ago but got his career back on track with an authoritative display at Doncaster and he more than deserves the step up in class he encounters here. The Tolworth form has taken plenty of hits and Capitaine turns out quickly after disappointing at Kempton in the Dovecote last week but there has to be a concern about the quick turnaround so preference for forecast purposes goes to Chalonnial, who arrives a fresher horse and has scope for further improvement.

Verdict

Dual course winner MOUNT MEWS is arguably a little unfortunate not to be unbeaten after 5 starts and can take the step up to Grade 2 level in his stride. Chalonnial was behind Capitaine in the Tolworth but likely has more to offer and can improve past Paul Nicholls' charge and fill the forecast spot.

Has hinted at temperament but produced an improved performance when making winning return over C&D in October. Yet to be asked for effort when falling 5 out at Newcastle in November. Off since.

Verdict

Tenor Nivernais got back to winning ways when slamming a field at Ascot on his latest start and now comes here with conditions events the only place he can realistically run due to a 10lb hike in the weights. This is also a quick turnaround after such a dominant performance so preference goes to fellow Grand National entry LE MERCUREY, who has shown smart form this season since stepped up to 3m and, although looking to have a stiff task at the ratings, is still improving over the larger obstacles having chased home Gold Cup second favourite Native River in the Denman Chase at Newbury last month. Seldom Inn was going well when falling behind Calett Mad at Newcastle in November and still looks to be progressing.

Verdict

TENOR NIVERNAIS was an impressive all-the-way winner at Ascot last month and will take plenty of pegging back here if turning up in anything like the same form. It's likely Le Mercurey is slightly flattered by his proximity to Native River last time but he's still the obvious main threat to the selection.

Didn't get home over 3m on heavy ground at Ayr last time but shaped well and probably won't be long in winning. Blinkers go on.

Verdict

THE ORANGE ROGUE found improvement with a first-time tongue-tie last time out and won't mind some give in the ground off 4lb higher under Brian Hughes for the first time. The 10-year-old has been found a decent chance to follow up and he can take it at the expense of Spoils Of War, who wears blinkers for the first time and remains in solid form. Achill Road Boy wasn't given the best of rides last time out and could go well if kept closer to the pace.

Verdict

SPOILS OF WAR shaped well again at Ayr last time and could open his account back in trip with blinkers fitted. Achill Road Boy and The Orange Rogue are both respected also.

Improved without warning to get off the mark with bags to spare at Newcastle (22f) at the start of the year. Not so good dropped back in trip at Ayr since but remains with potential.

Verdict

LATE DATE was travelling menacingly at Ayr last month before unseating on the far side of the course and perhaps today is the day for Micky Hammond's charge. The six-year-old could still be well handicapped off a mark of 100 and he can get the better of recent Musselburgh scorer Sammy B. The latter has gone up 4lb for that success but shapes as though better is expected next season when making his bow over the larger obstacles. Ronaldinho looks best of the remainder.

Verdict

SAMMY B won in good style at Musselburgh last month and can go well again after a 4 lb rise. Late Date was going well when coming to grief at Ayr last time and is respected along with McGinty's Dream.
