Fairly useful but temperamental on the Flat, stays 11f, well held on heavy ground last time. Sold from Michael Bell 13,000 gns in October and one to treat with caution on hurdles bow.

Verdict

REDICEAN was impressive when opening his account over hurdles in style over course and distance last time and Alan King's 85,000 guineas juvenile should be capable of repeating that effort here against tougher opposition. The challenge is led by Vaziani who himself scored by nine-lengths on his hurdles bow, with handler Robert Walford operating at 25 per cent of late. Kempton should suit Kapdad much more than Newbury did and he is a potential improver to note, while hurdles newcomer Ray's The Money was a handy performer on the Flat.

Verdict

Useful Flat winner, REDICEAN, impressed with his style of victory when making a winning hurdling debut over C&D last month, and Alan King’s charge seems sure to go on to better things. Kapdad will be winning races over timber sooner rather than later and rates the principal threat.

Off the mark at third attempt in Irish points, but has offered little in 3 starts under Rules, including on hurdling bow last month.

Verdict

Royal Magic could put his rivals under pressure if he jumps well from the front but now he's upped in trip and carrying a penalty, he might give way to SECRET INVESTOR late on. Paul Nicholls' charge found 2m5f too sharp on his seasonal bow here in November but he's a 3m point winner and is expected to go one better now granted a stiffer test. Both Duke Debarry and Chef Des Obeaux are potential improvers too now stepped up in trip and also merit inclusion on the shortlist.

Verdict

SECRET INVESTOR again showed lots of ability and promise 12 months on from his hurdling debut, and would probably have won but for a chance-ending mistake 2 out at this course. He remains with plenty of potential and is well up to winning races of this nature. Chef des Obeaux will appreciate these less testing conditions, while his stablemate Duke Debarry should also not be underestimated.

Sketchy jumper of fences but kept the mistakes down when 10 lengths second at Wincanton in November. Failed to back that up at Exeter since and races from 3 lb out of the handicap here.

Verdict

A competitive event but it could be dominated by the recent winners Bishops Court and THE TAILGATER. The marginal preference is for the latter because the horse he beat last time has run very well since and a 4lb rise in the ratings appears to be on the lenient side. Bishops Court won at Wincanton on Boxing Day but he is now 7lb higher and had the benefit of a 5lb claim on the occasion. Mercian Prince can be forgiven his run over the National fences last time out, while last year's second Rothman is another with claims.

Verdict

MERCIAN PRINCE had a gruelling race in the Grand Sefton, but he's been given time to recover from that and remains a handicap chaser to keep on the right side of. Bishops Court has had a really good year or so and is feared, while The Tailgater had a bit up his sleeve when successful at Doncaster last time.

Top-class chaser, winning 2 Grade 1s in April 2016, including Melling Chase at Aintree. As good as ever last season, and should strip fitter for return. Big player.

Verdict

Nicky Henderson has won the last two renewals of this and relies on Josses Hill this time around, who despite having question marks against his jumping, is a worthy Seven Barrows representative. God's Own is a Grade One winner and it is interesting he hasn't been seen since October when down the field at Aintree when in clear need of the run. His handler's horses are in much better form now and he has to be considered receiving weight here. However, WAITING PATIENTLY is unbeaten over fences and appears a graded winner in waiting. A delicate horse, he has been cautiously handled by the wise Malcolm Jefferson and his foot sure jumping can see the easy travelling son of Flemensfirth further enhance his reputation here.

Verdict

WAITING PATIENTLY made light of a 10-month absence to maintain his unbeaten record over fences at Carlisle in November and continues to look a very exciting prospect. The classy God's Own should strip fitter for his return and rates by far the biggest threat.

Verdict

RIVER FROST won over C&D last term and the form of his fifth in the Silver Trophy at Chepstow on his seasonal comeback could not have worked out any better. The likes of Sam Spinner, Wholestone, Old Guard and Bags Groove have all won races subsequently to frank the Welsh form line, so a big run is expected in the silks of JP McManus, who landed last year's renewal with Modus. There has been ante post support for Le Patriote, a French import who debuts for Dr Richard Newland and could be a danger to all on slow ground. Diese Des Bieffes continues on an upward curve and, along with William Henry, who was sent chasing at Cheltenham latest, gives Nicky Henderson a strong hand. Topofthegame reappeared over fences at Newbury and is another switching to timber to consider.

Verdict

Another good renewal of this long-standing handicap and the one that sticks out is RIVER FROST. A C&D winner, he very much caught the eye on his reappearance at Chepstow in a race that has worked out remarkably well, and his trainer Alan King continues in fine form. Not surprisingly, the shortlist is anything but, with Diese des Bieffes and William Henry high up on it for Nicky Henderson.

Verdict

Fountains Windfall sets the standard here, though he is likely to be short enough in the betting despite successive tumbles and could be worth opposing. The Young Master is likely to have bigger targets on his agenda later in the spring, while On Tour has a point to prove. It could be worth chancing 11-year-old BALLYALTON, who has gone well in two recent Cheltenham handicaps and he should be suited by this step up in trip. Ballykan is on a fair mark and could prove the main danger.

Verdict

FOUNTAINS WINDFALL was in the process of running a massive race when coming to grief in the Grade 1 Kauto Star over C&D on Boxing Day and is taken to make amends down in class if none the worse for that experience. Ballyalton is another dropping in class and may pose the biggest threat if his stamina holds up.

Showed improved form to gain a first handicap success at Warwick (2m) in November. Unable to continue the good work at Doncaster next time, though.

Verdict

This is not the strongest handicap hurdle by any stretch of the imagination and the unbeaten CHARMING ZEN makes plenty of appeal on his handicap debut for the Nicky Henderson team. He won nicely on his UK debut at Doncaster last February when with Dan Skelton and he could prove to be fairly handicapped with James Bowen's 5lb claim. Henderson also has the enigma that is Jenkins who has first-time blinkers to try and coax out the ability he showed in bumpers, while first-time cheekpieces could see further progression from Viserion.

Verdict

CHARMING ZEN is unbeaten in 2 starts for different yards and has moved again ahead of this handicap debut, but the suspicion is that he has been let in lightly. Don Bersy can be forgiven both outings this season and he is feared, while headgear may spark Jenkins (a stablemate of the selection) back to life.
