Runner-up in the German 2000 Guineas in May. Misfired at Royal Ascot next time and while recent odds-on Ayr victory was a confidence-booster, this may prove beyond him. Cheekpieces applied.

Verdict

Desert Encounter comes out top on official figures and warrants plenty of respect on his first start out of Group company in 14 months, but EMOTIONLESS rates the one to beat representing a red-hot Charlie Appleby stable. The Shamardal gelding is a Group 2-winning performer and chased home the top-class Benbatl on his only start so far this year at Meydan. That form is rock solid with the winner subsequently landing the Dubai Turf and he looks sure to go close on his UK return. First Sitting disappointed in France last time but won a Goodwood Listed event two starts ago.

Verdict

While EMOTIONLESS hasn't gone on to scale the heights anticipated following his most promising 2-y-o campaign, he proved that plenty of ability remains intact when chasing Benbatl home at Meydan in January (first run since being gelded). The 5-y-o may still prove to be a cut above this grade and gets the nod ahead of Desert Encounter and Spark Plug.

Confirmed debut promise when landing the odds over 1½m at Chepstow. Improved when fourth in Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot (14.2f) since and claims if coping with this step up in trip on handicap bow.

Verdict

Almoghared is the most interesting player in the line-up, switched to handicap company after finishing fourth behind subsequent Group 1 winner Kew Gardens in the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot, but Willie Mullins' STRATUM gets the nod. This high-class dual purpose performer arrives on the back of a career-best performance in the Ascot Stakes, where he ran a blinder to finish third despite being caught wide throughout. Dropping back from 2m4f shouldn't be a problem and the first-time hood could eke out further improvement, so a big run looks on the cards. Coeur de Lion, sixth in the Ascot Stakes, and Quloob, who wears first-time cheekpieces, are others to note.

Verdict

The vote goes to QULOOB, who did nothing but progress in 2017 and his Newmarket reappearance offered hope that this new trip will be within his range, and that there could be even better to come from him this year. Stratum did well to finish as close as he did in the Ascot Stakes and is a live danger, while Coeur De Lion and Cleonte also performed well in that race and are others to consider.

Tough and consistent colt who made a seamless transition to group company when runner-up in the Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle (6f) 3 weeks ago. Should be on the premises once again.

Verdict

A chance is taken on EQUILATERAL to bounce back from a disappointing 12th-placed finish in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. The Equiano colt impressed when bolting up in a novice contest two starts ago, he is the least exposed runner in the field and represents the stable which has won two of the last three renewals. Bacchus foiled a massive gamble on Dreamfield when winning the Wokingham Handicap four weeks ago and, entitled to improve for that first run since October, he must enter calculations. Hey Jonesy and Invincible Army, fifth and ninth respectively in the Commonwealth Cup, make up the shortlist.

Verdict

EQUILATERAL was a shade disappointing in the Commonwealth Cup but the memory of his reappearance demolition job at Doncaster remains fresh in the mind. He looked every inch a group-class sprinter that day and can confirm that impression by striking here. Projection's form is just about the best on offer and he is feared most ahead of Invincible Army and Wokingham hero Bacchus.

Might have won had she kept a straight line at Catterick (6f) last week but still has plenty to find on form and low draw a negative.

Verdict

Another wide-open renewal of this valuable contest but at these weights preference is for KINKS. Mick Channon's colt met with lots of trouble in running in the Listed National Stakes at Sandown two starts ago and he was not disgraced in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot last time out. On that occasion he finished one place behind the subsequent July Stakes second Konchek, while the third has won at Listed level since. Based on that evidence, he could take plenty of beating. Tin Hat also ran well at the Royal meeting having finished fifth in the Windsor Castle but he did finish behind the selection on his debut and is 4lb worse off at these weights. Little Kim was only a couple of lengths behind the winner in the Queen Mary and she was then successful in a Group 3 at Deauville. That form gives her a big shout but the daughter of Garswood has to give 10lb to Kinks.

Verdict

RED BALLOONS ticks all the right boxes as an improving Richard Fahey-trained runner with a draw in the middle, and she can give her yard a fourth winner in 6 years in this valuable sprint. Little Kim won a Group 3 in France last time and looks a big player despite top-weight. Kinks is another of the class acts and is considered also with Tin Hat.

Encouraging sixth of 16 in minor event at this course (6.5f, good to firm, 12/1) on debut 37 days ago, not knocked about. That form has proved incredibly strong, and he should take the beating here.

Verdict

WISE COUNSEL put in a very encouraging run when filling sixth place on his debut here last month and that form has worked out extremely well. On that occasion he was a place behind the subsequent Superlative Stakes third, while six of the first eight have all won since. Indian Sounds is another who should put his experience to good use, while Fume is surely better than what he displayed on debut having been sent off a well-backed favourite.

Verdict

WISE COUNSEL shaped well in a novice event at this course that's working out incredibly well and, with the benefit of experience over his main dangers, he can become the latest next-time-out winner to come from that race. Newcomers Chatham House and Conspiritor both have the pedigrees to prove above-average and are worth keeping an eye on.

Well-bred sort who belied market weakness and early keenness to get off the mark in a small field at Doncaster last time and promises to be suited by the stronger pace on off here. Big player.

Verdict

Flying North shrugged off a 6lb rise when winning at Doncaster last time but a further 5lb rise won't make life easy for Richard Hannon's charge. That said, she does stay this trip well and shouldn't be far away at the business end. Ceilidhs Dream beat Listed winner Sea Of Class at Newmarket earlier this year but hasn't really built on that, so perhaps HOMEOPATHIC can prove the answer. A winner at Newmarket four weeks ago, the three-year-old still looks nicely treated off 90 and seemingly enjoys this fast ground.

Verdict

HOMEOPATHIC took a while to hit full stride before forging clear at Newmarket last month, so it's to be expected that she'll benefit from this step up in trip. She is fancied to go in again before maybe tackling a higher grade, at the expense of another pair of interesting 3-y-os in Melodies and Ceilidhs Dream.
