Winning Irish pointer who built considerably on her exploits in maiden/novice company when bolting up on handicap debut at Ascot (19.2f) last weekend. Wisely turned out under a penalty and shortlisted

Verdict

NEW QUAY routed the opposition on his handicap debut at Ascot over 2m3f on Saturday and connections wisely take their chance just five days later as he will carry 10lb more in future handicaps. The drop in trip should pose no problems and he can prove too strong for the likes of Capitaine, who proved disappointing at the end of last season but could benefit from a first-time tongue-tie, and Majestic Touch, who ran well when sixth behind Storm Rising at Cheltenham last month.

Verdict

NEW QUAY (on the back of wind surgery) was most impressive when making a winning handicap debut at Ascot last weekend, and all looks set fair for another big run under a penalty. He gets the nod to come out on top, with Capitaine and French Crusader fancied to give the selection most to think about.

Promising first effort when third of 7 in novice hurdle at Chepstow (2m, good to soft) on debut 26 days ago. Will improve.

Verdict

Nicky Henderson took this contest 12 months ago with Claimantakinforgan, who went on to win at Grade 2 level, and the champion trainer saddles an exciting proposition in MISTER FISHER today. The son of Jeremy defied greenness on his debut at Kempton, where looking very strong at the finish to beat Manvers House, before being pitched in at Grade 2 level at the Aintree Festival. He travelled well on that occasion but found the testing ground too much for him, so a line can be put through that effort. He has reportedly done very well during his summer break and should take high rank in this division. Garrettstown created a good impression when winning his bumper at Chepstow in April but may prove better suited by running over further than 2m. The main threats could prove to be Reserve Tank, who showed decent promise when third over hurdles at Chepstow on his debut, and Fibonacci, a decent performer on the Flat who doesn't have many miles on the clock in that sphere and could improve going over timber.

Verdict

MISTER FISHER, Garrettstown, Bold Plan and Baddesley Knight all looked good prospects in bumpers last season. The first-named gets a narrow vote but the betting could provide more clues in a race which looks sure to throw up a few future winners.

Verdict

LOSTINTRANSLATION only gained one success over hurdles last season which came in a maiden here at the Ladbrokes Trophy meeting. That said, he posted some fantastic efforts in defeat and produced a career-best effort last time out when only just denied in a Grade 1 by Black Op over 2m4f at Aintree, his first run beyond 2m under Rules. The son of Flemensfirth has the scope for further improvement over intermediate trips and appeals as the type to achieve a lot more over fences. La Bague Au Roi was a classy mare over the smaller obstacles, winning in Grade 2 company at Ascot in January, and has the size to make up into a decent chaser, while Thomas Campbell and Talkischeap are no back numbers on what they have both shown over timber.

Verdict

A most interesting beginners' chase with the narrow vote in favour of LOSTINTRANSLATION. A winner over hurdles here back in December, he signed off last term with a fine second in the Grade 1 Mersey Novices' at Aintree and appeals as the type to do well over fences (very much a chaser on looks). La Bague Au Roi, in receipt of weight all round, and Thomas Campbell rate next best, in that order.

Expensive point winner who confirmed bumper debut promise when running away with a Ludlow bumper (15.7f) in May. In good hands and no surprise to see her feature now hurdling.

Verdict

Posh Trish won in good style on her hurdles debut at Chepstow over 2m3f when staying on well to beat Festival Dawn by four lengths. She warrants plenty of respect under a penalty, but could prove vulnerable dropped to 2m so preference goes to smart bumper performer DUHALLOW GESTURE. The daughter of King's Theatre won a Listed bumper at Huntingdon on Boxing Day before posting a solid effort to finish third in a Grade 2 to Getaway Katie Mai at Aintree having attempted to make all the running. Her trainer Anthony Honeyball does very well with mares and she has the potential to prove a smart recruit against her own sex. Sula Island won as she pleased on her first try over hurdles at Market Rasen and is considered along with Ludlow bumper winner Lust For Glory.

Verdict

Hurdling experience ought to count for plenty at this stage, so the percentage call is to side with POSH TRISH. A useful bumper winner, she made a fine start over hurdles when scoring at Chepstow last month and can come out on top with better to come. Sula Island was also impressive on her hurdles bow and is feared, whilst Duhallow Gesture and Lust For Glory may do best of the hurdling newcomers.

Form has really taken off in handicaps, value for extra when completing the hat-trick on first crack at 3m at Aintree recently. Same mark here so claims are obvious.

Verdict

David Pipe took this contest last season with Dell Arca and holds leading claims once again with 2015 Champion Bumper winner Moon Racer, who is just 3lb higher than when successful at Ayr in the spring and a campaign at three miles this term appears an interesting move for a horse with plenty of speed. Wait For Me was back in third in that Cheltenham Festival contest three years ago and he forms one half of a strong Philip Hobbs duo here, with Richard Johnson choosing stablemate Who's My Jockey, who is related to Hurricane Fly and may not have peaked just yet. Pilansberg and Rio Quinto both showed useful form as novices and make their first outings following wind surgery, while Jersey Bean was not stopping at the finish when scoring over 2m4f at Market Rasen and has to be considered on his first attempt at this distance. However, it has been hard not to be impressed with the way READY AND ABLE has racked up a three-timer and after reappearing as good as ever at Aintree when winning cosily last month, he arrives here 9lb well-in having escaped a penalty for that win in a race exclusive for conditional jockeys.

Verdict

A means to an end for some in this qualifier, but READY AND ABLE completed the hat-trick at Aintree on recent return from a break (likely to prove strong form), and given he can race from the same mark, his claims are obvious. Jersey Bean isn't really crying out for 3m but he's a definite threat if seeing it out, with Ocean Cove another to consider.

Reacted positively to cheekpieces in the spring, winning twice at around 19f. Third in a pair of comeback outings this autumn, shaping better than result at Fakenham latterly. Another to consider.

Verdict

Paul Nicholls' strapping Kapgarde gelding KAPCORSE became a man when thriving on his chase debut at Bangor in the spring and despite a 12lb hike from the assessor, the progressive five-year-old, who was a comfortable eight-length winner that day, is backed to enhance his reputation in this competitive contest. Fellow youngster Siruh Du Lac can bounce back to his best on a sound surface and this looks the ideal distance for now, while Dicosimo was a Listed winner over hurdles and is well worth trying over the larger obstacles once again. Thomas Crapper makes appeal off a mark 7lb lower than when successful in a C&D Grade 3 in March last year, with De Dollar Man is just 1lb higher than when scoring in an Exeter handicap chase last winter.

Verdict

KAPCORSE had lots in hand when making a successful chase debut at Bangor in April and could still be ahead of his mark despite a 12 lb rise. The lightly-raced De Dollar Man appeals as the sort who could go on to even better things this term, while Siruh du Lac is another low-mileage chaser who likely has more to offer. Zamparelli shaped quite well last time and also makes the shortlist.
