Verdict

Sent off a short price to build on his promising debut effort, TRICORN didn't disappoint as he cruised to a facile success over 7f at Wolverhampton and John Gosden's charge may have been underestimated by an opening mark of 75, with the step up to 1m possibly bringing about further improvement. Faience also got off the mark at the second attempt over this trip at Chelmsford and that form has been boosted by the third and fourth winning since. She rates a serious threat, with Marzouq considered best of the rest.

Verdict

Last-time-out maiden winners TRICORN and Faience both possess striking potential and can fight out the finish of this handicap. Marginal preference is for the former, a well-bred colt who did the job in good style at Wolverhampton recently and represents a top yard which boasts a fine strike rate at this venue. Marzouq should benefit from the step up to a mile and is best of the rest.

Verdict

VEENA arrives on the back of a 6f double here and at Chelmsford and is a previous winner over this track and trip. While she may not be the most straightforward, David Simcock's filly remains unexposed and a 3lb rise for her latest success may not be enough to prevent the hat-trick. Poppy In The Wind was only a head behind the selection at Newcastle and is a big threat off slightly better terms, while Ki Ki returned with a good effort at Newcastle last month and should strip fitter now.

Verdict

The vote goes to KI KI, who was only beaten around a length off this mark when fourth in a C&D handicap last time. That form looks solid (the winner and second have both scored subsequently) and Bryan Smart's charge should be sharper now given that she was returning from a 3-month break that day. Fredricka is feared most, ahead of Poppy In The Wind and the hat-trick seeking Veena.

Verdict

It could pay to side with BAHANGO, who won a similar C&D event under the same conditional jockey in January and has run to a similar level of form in two starts subsequently. Off the same mark as when half-a-length second at Wolverhampton last week, he looks sure to go close. Horsforth had been running consistently well before the turn of the year and must enter calculations on her return to action, while Wolverhampton scorer Top of The Bank is unlikely to be far away either.

Verdict

HORSFORTH hit the target 3 times last year, including over this C&D, and she went down all guns blazing when runner-up off this mark here on her latest start in December. The 5-y-o is taken to resume winning ways, perhaps at the chief expense of Top of The Bank, who got back on track when striking at Wolverhampton and remains on a handy mark. Ambitious Icarus and Bahango are others to consider.

3-time C&D winner. Three wins from 10 runs last year. Latest win here in January. 9/2, good second of 6 in handicap at this course (7.1f) 18 days ago.

Verdict

BARWAH has returned this year looking better than ever, backing up her C&D success with a narrow 7f defeat here, and despite a further 4lb rise, she remains lightly weighted up in class and looks sure to be in the firing line again. Swift Emperor is entitled to improve for his comeback run here last month and merits consideration off this 1lb lower mark, while War Department and Amber Mystique are others to keep an eye on.

Verdict

If able to reproduce the form he showed when scoring here on Thursday, WAR DEPARTMENT will take plenty of stopping. Indeed, Keith Dalgleish's charge won with more in hand than the 1¼-length margin of victory suggests, and he's effectively just 1 lb higher under a penalty with Shirley Teasdale's claim taken into account. Testa Rossa and Swift Emperor can fill the places.

Verdict

Ray's The Money is likely to be popular in the betting once more but he was a beaten favourite for the second consecutive race at Redcar when last seen in September and might not be one to trust at likely short odds once more. Bonnie Gals probably has a bit to find, while Bowed Not Broken is an interesting newcomer to this sphere. A tentative vote goes the way of GLORIOUS ARTIST, who has been gelded since his last run in September and should have come on plenty for that handicap debut experience.

Verdict

Not for the first time, RAY'S THE MONEY failed to convince with his finishing effort when runner-up in a Redcar maiden on his final start of 2016. However, his conqueror that day did the form no harm at all when third in a listed race subsequently and, with main rival Glorious Artist yet to conclusively prove that he stays 7f, Michael Bell's charge should come out on top this time.

Verdict

ALFOLK was declared a non-runner at Chelmsford on Thursday evening and this looks to be a decent opening for David Simock's charge to get off the mark. The three-year-old should be suited by dropping back to 1m and a switch back to Tapeta could also see him in a better light. A mark of 57 looks fair and he can get the better of Hollywood Harry, who improved on his handicap debut here in August. Panther In Pink returned to form last time out and has to enter calculations.

Verdict

AFRICAN GREY failed to pull up any trees in 2-y-o maidens, but he could be a different proposition now faced with a stiffer test and pitched into a handicap. The fact that his yard has been among the winners recently augurs well and he is marginally preferred to Irish raider Annie Apple. Alfolk clearly found 1¼m too stiff a test at Lingfield last time and also enters calculations.
