Point/bumper winner who shaped well in 2m Worcester mares' maiden hurdle last month, taking a strong hold. Likely to improve and the one to beat.

Verdict

MARIA'S BENEFIT ended her last campaign finishing midfield in a Grade 2 bumper at Aintree and she returned last month with a second-placed finish on her hurdling debut at Worcester. Al Shahir showed a decent level of ability in bumpers and he could prove to be the main threat to the selection. Darling Maltaix was very disappointing on his debut for this yard but it is far too soon to be writing him off.

Verdict

MARIA'S BENEFIT made an encouraging start over hurdles at Worcester last month, and her experience can see her come home in front here with the prospect of improvement on the cards. All her rivals are interesting having their first runs over jumps, Darling Maltaix perhaps the pick of them ahead of Al Shahir.

Fairly useful hurdler who bounced back to winning ways at Plumpton when last seen but appears to have his work cut out on chase bow here.

Verdict

A very interesting race for the time of year but it will take a good one to beat DIEGO DU CHARMIL, despite the fact that he has to carry a penalty for his win here last month. The five-year-old jumped very well on that occasion and he was the best of these over hurdles. That said, The Unit was progressive over timber last season and he was last seen finishing third in a Grade 1 at Aintree in April. Shantou Rock and Space Oddity are the pick of the remainder.

Verdict

DIEGO DU CHARMIL may only have had a stablemate to beat on his debut over fences here last month but he went about things in good style and is expected to make up into one of the leading novice chasers this season. Space Oddity is the other runner with experience in this sphere having won impressively at Uttoxeter when last seen, and he's the chief danger as things stand.

Verdict

BEER GOGGLES bumped into a well-handicapped rival when finishing second at Aintree in May. A 10lb rise for that effort may appear to be very harsh but this son of Oscar did pull 27 lengths clear of the remaining field. Ballyoptic was not far off the best staying hurdlers last season and he could outclass these if fully wound up today but surely he has much bigger targets later in the campaign. Winningtry remains unexposed and he also warrants a place on the shortlist for this contest. Mighty Leader and Whataknight are others who could go well in a very competitive contest.

Verdict

A classy handicap with SIR MANGAN offered, given his excellent record fresh and with his usual positive tactics often seen to good effect at this venue. The market will help shape the race with so many returning from a break, though Ballyoptic and Winningtry seem sure to have their supporters at opposite ends of the weights.

Verdict

FLYING ANGEL and Frodon both have to give 10lb and upwards to their rivals but both are classy enough to do so. Preference, though, goes to the former as he landed a Grade 1 prize at Aintree in the spring and the Nigel Twiston-Davies team are currently in decent enough form at the beginning of the season. Frodon himself was a revelation last season and it seems interesting that he has a first-time tongue tie fitted now. Knockgraffon has the potential to improve on just his fifth start over fences, while Black Corton has improved since going up in trip in small field novice chases but seems to have an inflated rating.

Verdict

BLACK CORTON has looked a natural over fences, enhancing his excellent strike rate at Fontwell 2 months ago, and the weight he receives from Graded-winners Flying Angel and Frodon may prove decisive.

Got it together to win at Wincanton (19.7f, heavy) in March and quickly back from a blip when fourth at Fontwell the following month. Since joined new yard and no forlorn hope.

Verdict

G FOR GINGER has improved plenty on her last couple of starts and posted a very solid front running performance to see of Maria's Benefit (runs 2:00 here today) at Worcester and the daughter of Lucarno can improve for a step back up in trip. Champagne To Go looks one capable of improvement now going handicapping, while Kentford Heiress has been consistent of late and is worthy of consideration.

Verdict

G FOR GINGER has improved upon returning to the fray over hurdles in recent months, and with the possibility of more to come now handicapping in this sphere, she gets the narrow vote. Kentford Heiress is in good order and should be thereabouts, while Lagavara may emerge best of the remainder on return to action.

Verdict

DOITFORJOE could follow up his Plumpton victory last month here only 3lb higher in the ratings now. Noel Fehily got a fine tune out of him that day and he could have plenty of progression to come in staying chases this term. Twist On Ginge, a half-brother to Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Little Josh, could be seen to his best effect now taking on the larger obstacles and can't be discounted on his chase debut, while Bramble Brook bumped into a well-handicapped rival when five-lengths adrift at Stratford and he can't be discounted.

Verdict

MAID OF MILAN has not run for nearly a year, but she’s a straightforward type who looks sure to give her running tackling the larger obstacles for the first time, so earns the narrow vote. Bramble Brook remains feasibly treated and would be a big player if turning up in similar form, while it all clicked into place for Doitforjoe at Plumpton last month and he completes the shortlist.

Verdict

ROOSTER COGBURN attracted plenty of support prior to making an encouraging racecourse debut at Kempton back in the spring and he is entitled to have learnt plenty from that initial experience. Brianstorm has to be considered considering his handler's fine record with newcomers and he was impressive on his sole appearance between the flags, while River Bray is another to consider and was not disgraced on debut at Kempton back in February.

Verdict

It's taken BRIANSTORM a while to make it to the track under Rules following his point win in April 2016, but he represents an excellent bumper yard, so he's bound to be well prepared for this. River Bray sets a solid if unspectacular standard on his fourth-placed effort at Kempton, while Crooks Peak and Timeforben are likely types on paper.
