Has failed to show a great deal either start upon returning from over 2 years off earlier this year.

Verdict

KUBLAI was an easy 18-length winner at Worcester last week and he will be extremely hard to beat if arriving here in the same form, despite the 7lb penalty. Kingston has been running well of late and he would be the most likely beneficiary if the selection were to disappoint. Although, the recent Newton Abbot winner Scorpion Star should not be completely discounted.

Verdict

KUBLAI ended a losing run stretching back to 2015 at Worcester 7 days ago and, in a race lacking depth, he is fancied to defy a penalty. Kingston is also fancied to feature with Flemen Majic.

Sister to modest hurdler Sixties Idol (21f-2¾m winner), and half-sister to fair hurdler Brilliant Barca (2m winner). Modest form at best on Flat.

Verdict

Bodes Well got off the mark over hurdles at Fontwell recently and another good run can be expected from him, although he is vulnerable under a 7lb penalty. With that in mind, the preference is for BRANDY JAMES, who has made the frame in both previous starts over obstacles and he is favoured at these weights. Idilico won on the Flat in France and is very interesting on his debut for Ian Williams.

Verdict

IDILICO quickly attained a fairly useful level on the Flat in his native France and having transferred to a successful yard, is likely to be well prepared for this hurdles bow. On that basis it would come as no surprise were he to see off established-pair Brandy James and Bodes Well.

Improved for step up in trip/fitting of a tongue tie when winning pair of handicap hurdles last winter. Bred for chasing but a chance he'll need the run after a break.

Verdict

DIEG MAN made a winning debut over fences at Cartmel in August and that effort suggests that a mark of 133 may underestimate this five-year-old. Forth Bridge is a consistent sort and it would be no surprise to see him in the mix once again. The shortlist for this competitive contest is completed by Another Stowaway, Ballyarthur and Just A Sting.

Verdict

This looks very competitive. CONTENTED could have a fitness edge on a few of these rivals and gets the nod to overcome a 5 lb rise for last month's chase debut success but there are lots of dangers, headed by Station Master, Dieg Man and Just A Sting.

Progressive since switched to handicaps earlier in the spring quickening clear to get off the mark at Southwell in April. Likely to need this first run back, though.

Verdict

The jumping of Alan King's MIA'S STORM kind of fell apart last season over fences, falling when favourite for both the Kauto Star Novices' Chase and Future Champion Novices' Chase on her last two outings. However, she can gain a confidence-boosting victory switched to timber on her return to action. Boreham Bill has the benefit of a recent run and, despite disappointing that day at Worcester, could get involved, while Kaki De La Pree may need it softer than this to be seen at his best but cannot be overlooked.

Verdict

CARRIGMOORNA MATT looks the sort to show immediate improvement for her new yard on British debut and, as such, stands out amongst a field that are either averagely handicapped or have questions to answer. Boreham Bill would be a threat if building on his debut for Emma Lavelle and Coologue is potentially thrown in if revitalised after 6 months off.

Point winner who made an encouraging start under rules but will probably come into his own over longer trips as a hurdler. Has had a wind operation.

Verdict

DOSTAL PHIL wasn't beaten far in what looked a hot little novice contest when fourth at Bangor last year, and the 295,000-euros purchase appears the pick of the Philip Hobbs pair in this, representing a stable in good order and making his first start since a wind operation. Stablemate Sandy Boy is an interesting newcomer, while Dan Skelton also has two going to post and it is perhaps of note that Harry Skelton has chosen to ride Market Rasen bumper winner Tokay Dokey over point winner Diomede des Mottes.

Verdict

DOSTAL PHIL arrived with a big reputation prior to his hurdling debut last winter and, while he failed to justify odds-on favouritism, he shaped with enough promise to suggest he's well capable of winning a race of this nature back from a wind operation for his in-form stable. Kitikat and Tokay Dokay are just 2 of several interesting rivals.

Little sign of ability under Rules so far.

Little sign of ability under Rules so far.

Verdict

Dan Skelton's SOUNDS OF ITALY made the podium over hurdles on his stable bow here last time and, off a 2lb lower mark now switching back to fences, he is backed to build on that outing last month. The consistent duo Psychocandy and Withoutdefavourite have to be considered, while it is interesting that James Bowen rides Gavin Cromwell's Irish raider Toosey. The Jugopolist also makes slight appeal back on the mark he hit the frame off at this venue in the summer.

Verdict

SOUNDS OF ITALY never really looked like justifying strong support on debut for Dan Skelton at this venue last month, but the switch back to fences may well see him in a better light and he's worth another chance against this opposition. Toosey also reverts to the larger obstacles and is second choice.
