Long since established as none too straightforward, and while last month's runner-up effort on return confirms his mark is fair, he also showed why he's still a maiden.

Verdict

EQUUS MILLAR lost little in defeat when fourth behind progressive novices If The Cap Fits and Solomon Grey at Bangor and is expected to give a good account now handicapping off a mark of 110. With Pleasure went well at Chepstow last time and has place claims now dropping back in trip off 2lb higher, likewise Southwell runner-up Vado Forte. Others worthy of consideration are Dan Skelton's Resiliency, who is moving outside of maiden company, and Ardmayle who won off 3lb higher over fences in the spring.

Verdict

Any number of potential improvers now handicapping, with the likes of GRANIA O'MALLEY, Admiral Kid and Resiliency all treated on form in other codes. They are preferred in that order, though this could end up being a lively betting heat.

Uncharacteristically put in a sloppy round of jumping at Fakenham on penultimate start, but was soon back to form when runner-up at Newbury (16.4f) last month. Claims if turning up in similar form

Verdict

AZZURI has the best form on offer in this contest and has been found a winnable opening by Dan Skelton. A disappointing beaten favourite in novice company at Worcester when last seen in September, the six-year-old is likely to have benefitted from a break and can bounce back here. Vivaccio ran well on his first outing since March 2016 last time out and will relish the likely testing ground, while Red Riverman looks fairly handicapped and was unlucky to bump into a well-treated winner at Newbury 24 days ago.

Verdict

SWIFT CRUSADOR has offered plenty of encouragement in 2 starts over fences, shaping much better than the distance beaten suggests last time. He remains unexposed and is worth another chance. Azzuri could be all the better returning after a break, while Imjoeking may well bounce back over this shorter trip.

Progressed gradually over hurdles last season and all the better for chase debut/return when taking class 3 handicap at Cheltenham. Followed up in listed event at Newbury 5 days later and big player.

Verdict

Duel At Dawn attempts to return to winning form having been brushed aside by Sizing Tennessee at Cheltenham last month and, with that form having taken a welcome boost on New Year's Day, he looks to have a great opportunity to gain the biggest success of his career. He holds Flintham on their Exeter showing in November but the latter could easily finish closer here with a first-time tongue tie likely to bring about some improvement. Ms Parfois and Western Climate have won their last two races over fences and could very easily land a blow up in class but the vote goes to BIG RIVER. Lucinda Russell's gelding was the best of these over hurdles and had excuses when pulled up behind Clan Des Obeaux at Haydock last time. He still looks an exciting type and the return to 3m is in his favour.

Verdict

MS PARFOIS has looked a natural over fences so far, improving again when landing a listed event at Newbury last month, and should make a bold bid for the hat-trick. Duel At Dawn is another who's on the upgrade and is feared most.

Notched second handicap success in the mud at Uttoxeter (23f) last month, responding well to lead after the last. Should still be competitive after a 5 lb rise.

Verdict

Black Ivory may be the best handicapped of these but there has to be a concern about the trip. The six-year-old did finish second over 3m two starts ago but his performance last time out suggested that 2m4f on very soft ground may be his ideal conditions. No Hassle Hoff finished behind Sam Spinner at Haydock last time out but he was well beaten by that rival and those that finished around him have been disappointing subsequently. With all that in mind, the nod goes to THE ORGANIST, who maintained her unbeaten record over 3m when winning at Newbury last month. That form has been boosted with the fourth winning since and this mare has only been raised 6lb in the ratings. Templeross has been disappointing so far this season but he is well handicapped and represents a yard in top form at the moment.

Verdict

The progressive BLACK IVORY is very much unexposed around 3m and can make light of a 6 lb rise for Aintree and make it 4 wins in his last 7 starts. No Hassle Hoff wasn't disgraced in a warm race at Haydock last time and he's sure to be well suited by the slightly longer trip here, while Prime Venture showed he's going the right way with a smooth win last time and is respected despite top weight.

€60,000 purchase who was a promising second in bumper here 12 months ago, and made positive start over hurdles when making a winning debut at Hereford on belated return 4 weeks ago. Should improve.

Verdict

Count Meribel's three-race winning run came to an end in Graded company at Cheltenham last time, but he lost nothing in defeat that day when tackling three miles for the first time and is sure to go well now back to a distance similar to what he has thrived at so far this term. Chooseyourweapon should love the give in the ground and the unbeaten hurdler appears to be still on the up, however, it is another yet to taste defeat who gets the nod here with Nicky Henderson's MR WHIPPED backed to have the edge. He has shown a likeable attitude on both starts under Rules so far and is only set to improve as his career progresses. Cave Top has been winning well in handicaps, but this represents a huge step up in class, while Paisley Park trounced the well-regarded Vision Des Flos at Hereford and could be a fly in the ointment.

Verdict

MR WHIPPED looks an exciting prospect having won both his starts over hurdles so far and appeals as the most likely winner. Count Meribel should be suited by the return to this trip and is feared most.

Verdict

This is not a vintage renewal of this Grade 3 contest and Missed Approach is bound to be popular given his finishing position in the Ladbrokes Trophy last time out. That form has not worked out particularly well but he did finish second in the National Hunt Chase last March. COGRY has certainly improved his jumping technique in the last 12 months or so and he was only beaten a neck in the Scottish National last April. He is now just 7lb higher in the ratings, which is slightly surprising given that he won by four lengths in a valuable handicap at Cheltenham in October. Sir Mangan is another with strong form claims based on his victory at Bangor last time out, while Cresswell Breeze and Russe Blanc have each-way claims.

Verdict

The handicapper has taken a chance dropping MISSED APPROACH 6 lb for his run in the Ladbroke as he was still in third until a mistake 2 out and he could take a bit of stopping if recapturing the form he showed when runner-up at last year's Cheltenham Festival. Kerry Lee does well in these staying chases and her pair Krackatoa King and Goodtoknow, who was second in 2017, head the many dangers.

Half-brother to fairly useful hurdler/chaser Gold Patrol (21f-23f winner, by Gold Well), stays 3¼m: dam, point winner. Stable 14-102 in bumpers in last 5 seasons.

Verdict

A difficult bumper to weigh up with each of the nine declared runners making their debut. Allonok represents powerful connections and is likely to go close, while Thebannerkingrebel and Brigadier Bob are others to keep an eye on. Baby Ted is a half-brother to dual Grade 2 winner Colin's Sister and is sure to know his job, but slight preference is for stablemate MIDNIGHT TROUBLE. He is also bred to have plenty of ability, being a full-brother to five-time winner Midnight Request, and jockey bookings would arguably point in his favour.

Verdict

ALLONOK gets the nod to make a winning start for the Skeltons but there are plenty of other likely types on paper and the betting will likely be informative. The Nigel Twiston-Davies pair Baby Ted and Midnight Trouble and Kerry Lee's Brigadier Bob are also shortlisted.
