Back to form with a bang when winning pair of 2m Uttoxeter handicap hurdles this month. Clearly thriving and could be up to completing the hat-trick if proving as effective over fences.

Back to form with a bang when winning pair of 2m Uttoxeter handicap hurdles this month. Clearly thriving and could be up to completing the hat-trick if proving as effective over fences.

Verdict

The Skelton brothers teamed up to win this race 12 months ago and the same combination have another outstanding chance with the hat-trick seeking DEFINING YEAR this time around. The nine-year-old won two hurdle starts at Uttoxeter earlier this month by a combined total of 16 lengths and there seems no reason why he can't be equally as effective over the larger obstacles. Exitas' latest third over hurdles at Leicester was a promising effort and he warrants plenty of respect on his return to chasing duty, while course winner Mr Kit Cat has the scope to jump a fence.

Verdict

It's taken a bit of time for DEFINING YEAR to find his feet for Dan Skelton but he's firmly up and running now and can complete a quick hat-trick if taking to chasing at the first time of asking. Fellow chasing newcomers Avispa and Adrrastos could be the pair to give him most to do.

Verdict

Bryony Frost's valuable 5lb claim gives Black Corton a fighting chance and he was narrowly denied the double over 2m4f here last time, but KNIGHT OF NOIR rates the one to beat. Rated 8lb higher than the former over hurdles, and having impressively notched up a double in that sphere recently, the past course winner looks sure to mount a bold bid on his return to chasing duty. Verygoodverygood can take the bronze medal fitted with an eye-shield for his fencing bow.

Verdict

BLACK CORTON has made a good start over fences, keeping on well late despite conceding first run over shorter here latest. He's open to further improvement in this sphere and can make it 2 wins from his last 3 starts. Knight of Noir has been in rude health himself over hurdles of late and rates the chief threat.

Gained first handicap win of his career in refitted cheekpieces at Wincanton in April (20f). Turned in a moody effort at Fontwell last month and isn't obviously crying out for this trip.

Verdict

SLIM PICKENS has backed up his comfortable selling hurdle success with three solid placed efforts in handicap company at this venue and, although he continues to creep up the ratings, another bold bid looks assured. A recent victory on the Flat at Bath will have left Rolling Maul brimming with confidence and the past C&D scorer warrants plenty of respect on his return to NH duty, while the unexposed Buckle Street cannot be ruled out either.

Verdict

BUCKLE STREET should be spot on after a run on the Flat last month and might be worth siding with as he's unexposed as a stayer and looks fairly treated based on his Southwell novice win in February. Slim Pickens has a string of good efforts to his name over slightly shorter here in recent weeks and should go well again, while A Boy Named Suzi was runner-up over C&D last time.

Not scored for some time and hasn't done enough in recent starts to make him of interest here.

Verdict

TASTE THE WINE showed a likeable attitude when just edging out On Alberts Head in a similar selling handicap at Newton Abbot and he could prove tough to beat if arriving in the same determined mood. The latter only has a head to make up with the selection so he must be respected, while Prince Mahler wouldn't be the most consistent but is certainly capable when putting it all together. First-time cheekpieces and dropping into Plating company for the first time gives him a definite chance.

Verdict

AAMAN is now 3 lb below his last winning mark and was far from disgraced over a shorter trip at Ffos Las last month. He gets the nod in a tricky-looking event. On Alberts Head, Prince Mahler and Taste The Wine complete the shortlist.

Poor form at best in bumpers and yet to achieve much in 2 starts over hurdles. Probably one for longer distances further down the line.

Verdict

The 116-rated TAWS rates the one to beat on these terms and appears to have been found an ideal opening to break her hurdles duck at the sixth attempt. She is entitled to come on for her latest run, which was her first since April and first since rejoining this stable, so is expected to take a forward step this evening. Recent Southwell second Fit The Brief is feared most, while Moontripper is no forlorn hope for a place.

Verdict

TAWS didn't convince over hurdles for David Pipe but the pick of her exploits in this sphere leave her with obvious claims, and she gets the narrow vote. Fit The Brief and Lady Lunchalot may well emerge as the chief threats.

Verdict

Jodies Jem continues to knock hard on the door and wouldn't be winning out of turn if breaking his sequence of three previous second-placed finishes now returned to handicap company. However, it might be worth siding with UTILITY, who looks better handicapped than the first-named now turned out under a penalty for his comfortable track and trip success latest. Cillian's Well, Courtlands Prince and Billy My Boy are all respected in their current form in what promises to be a competitive heat.

Verdict

UTILITY was a clear-cut winner over C&D last week so his follow-up claims under a penalty are fairly obvious. Cillian's Well is thriving at present and is feared most, though Courtlands Prince could easily resume his progress on reappearance.

Half-sister to winning pointer by Black Sam Bellamy, dam won over jumps abroad. Last of 3 finishers in Irish mares maiden on completed start in points, fell last time (May 29).

Verdict

Woodfield Robin fell on her second start between the flags and now debuts under Rules but the other three contenders all have something to recommend them. A chance is taken on OLD HARRY ROCKS gaining compensation for his short-head beating at Newton Abbot now granted this stiffer test. A step up in trip could similarly suit recent course (2m4f) second Black Anthem, while For Instance is entitled to improve for the fitting of first-time cheekpieces and reverts to the smaller obstacles after registering a distance success here in a novices' chase last month.

Verdict

There isn't a great deal between OLD HARRY ROCKS, For Instance and Black Anthem on these terms, but Harry Fry's representative should improve for this step up in trip so he is marginally preferred.
