Ben Pauling

With a couple of high-profile winners at Newbury's Winter Festival, Ben Pauling is looking forward to lots more success as the jump season steps up a gear for the Christmas period.

BEN PAULING can well believe Santa Claus arrived early for him and his team at Bourton Hill Farm in Bourton-On-The Water as Willoughby Court stamped himself down as one of the best novice chasers seen out when defeating Yanworth in the Grade 2 Ladbrokes Novices’ Chase at Newbury recently and just for good measure High Bridge chipped in a victory in the Ladbrokes Intermediate Hurdle (formerly the Gerry Fielden) at the same meeting.

It has been a whirlwind rise in his training career which only commenced at the start of the 2013 season and with 23 winners on the board already he shouldn’t be long in passing his personal best of 32 for 2016-17.

Pauling has the former top-class hurdler Barters Hill almost primed for action and several young horses of untapped talent who could well become household names in the future.

Ben said: “We have made a great start and I couldn’t be happier. We’ve got a lot of nice horses and they have been running well and what more could you ask of them.”

Ben kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about those he hopes can carry on the good work as the season progresses.

Winner of four of his 12 starts and currently rated 142 over hurdles. Made a winning reappearance in a listed handicap hurdle at Sandown (2m) in December when beating Caid du Lin half a length off a mark of 139.

Trainer Says:

He obviously pleased us when winning at Sandown a couple of weeks ago and we know he is very much best when fresh so we will probably not likely see him again until Cheltenham and run him in something like the County Hurdle.

Form Profile:

No wins from 7 starts and currently rated 117 over fences. Finished third, beaten two and a quarter lengths, to Workbench at Sandown (1m 7 1/2f) this month off his current mark.

Trainer Says:

I was much much happier with his last run and he's been a bit of a confusing horse as he came from the pointing field and we thought three miles would be his trip. At the moment we have dropped him back to two miles but I think he will be a two and a half miler in time and he just needed to get a bit of confidence. He ran much better last time out and he just needs to spend less time in the air but he will make a very good chaser. He is on a workable mark once he gets his act together.

Barley Hill (IRE)

Form Profile:

Unplaced when joint favourite for a bumper at Southwell in November.

Trainer Says:

He is a lovely horse and he just came off the bridle and got lost at Southwell. We have been looking to run him the last few weeks but the ground has been too soft. He is a nice big powerful type and he will stay in bumpers this year. He may not be an out and out bumper horse but he will be a nice one for the future.

Barters Hill (IRE)

Form Profile:

Winner of seven of his 9 starts and rated 142 over hurdles. Unbeaten in four bumpers and won his first three races over hurdles including when beating Politologue 12 lengths in the Grade 1 Challow Hurdle at Newbury (2m 4 1/2f) in December 2015. Sustained a tendon injury when pulled up on his chasing bow at Cheltenham (2m 4 1/2f) in November 2016.

Trainer Says:

He is in great order and will probably run in mid-January or sometime around then. We are going to stay over hurdles with him for the rest of the season and see how we get on. On his home work he seems to be very well and happy.

Boreham Bill (IRE)

Form Profile:

Winner of one of his 5 starts. Finished fourth, beaten eight and a quarter lengths, to Santini on his hurdling debut at Newbury (2m 4 1/2f) this month.

Trainer Says:

He blew up at Newbury but he is a decent horse and I expect him to go quite a long way this season. We will be looking to get him out either at Ascot later this week or Huntingdon or Doncaster over Christmas. He is a nice type and will progress.

Winner of her only point-to-point in Ireland and unplaced in a bumper at Aintree in October.

  • Trained by: Ben Pauling
  • Last Race: Hereford, 16 Jan 2018 15:05

Winner of two of his 6 starts and currently rated 127 over hurdles. Trainer Says:

He is a horse who I think probably would have won at Doncaster on Friday when falling three out. He is a nice type and he is learning all the time. He is a decent little horse and I think he is well handicapped.

Form Profile:

Unplaced favourite in a bumper at Lingfield in November.

Trainer Says:

He is a horse we have always thought a lot of and, again, he had a little niggle which came to light at Lingfield which is why he ran so poorly. It is nothing too serious and he is just having an easier time but still in training and not being overly stretched for the next few weeks. We will bring him back and hopefully see what he is made of.

Coeur Pensif (FR)

Form Profile:

Runner-up in his only point-to-point and fell when in rear in a novices’ hurdle won by Count Meribel at Ascot (2m 5 1/2f) in November.

Trainer Says:

He is a nice novice for the future and he will be more of a chasing type than a hurdler. He didn’t jump well enough at Southwell then tipped up at Ascot where he fell after jumping the hurdle. He needs a confidence booster and he is one to watch in the second half of the season.

I always thought he was a chaser and nothing went right for him over fences. I brought him back over hurdles the other day and he ran much better. I am looking to run him over Christmas and he is a decent little horse who will, hopefully, be back in the winner’s enclosure soon.

Trainer Says:

He is lovely horse who won his first two and we tried dropping him in at Cheltenham on Saturday and he just pulled too hard for a mile and a half. He probably needs dropping back in trip to two and a half miles and being allowed to bowl along. He is a decent horse but what this horse does over hurdles is a bonus as he will make a smashing chaser.

He is a horse I hold in huge regard. I have always loved him and he need his first run and I gave him too much of a job conceding more than 16lb  to the winner at Aintree on that bottomless ground.
