Donald McCain Stable Tour

Some interesting recruits from the Irish point-to-point field has Donald McCain looking forward to the newcomers joining his established stars to continue filling the stable's coffers

  • Stable Tours

The last couple of seasons has seen Donald McCain return to his previously high standards and with 98 winners and £838,514 in prize money last term there is no guessing that a return to centurion status will be on the agenda for the Bankhouse Stables trainer.

McCain has already sent out 37 winners so far and like most of his counterparts has been awaiting for the heavens to open to launch many of his stable stalwarts.

McCain said: “The last few weeks have been a bit frustrating for us and we are trying to get first runs of the season into many of them and with a bit of luck with the weather that would have happened. However, we are all in the same boat and we just have to be patient.”

The exciting Uppertown Prince and the classy Cloudy Dream and Mount Mews should all be making noise for McCain in the near future and he has a host of untapped Irish point-to-point talent who could well prove household names for a stable that is renowned for the longevity of it’s inmates.

Donald kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about those he hopes can blossom as the season progresses.

Form Profile:

Winner of four of his 20 starts and currently rated 125 over hurdles. Finished runner-up, beaten ten lengths, to Thistle Do Nicely in a handicap hurdle at Wetherby (2m) on Saturday.

Trainer Says:

He has been busy and has done well for us and won three times over hurdles. He ran reasonably well at Wetherby on Saturday but is due a break and could find further opportunities in handicap hurdles in the Spring.

Birch Vale (IRE)

Form Profile:

Winner of two of her 8 starts and currently rated 112 over hurdles. Scored by two and three quarter lengths from Blue Baton on her latest start in a novice hurdle at Hexham (2m) in May.

Trainer Says:

She is a nice mare and big and immature with a good pedigree. I would like to think she will improve this year as she has got a bit stronger and I am sure she will be jumping fences at some stage. She wants two to two and a half miles on soft ground.

Winner of one of his 3 starts and currently rated 124. Finished third, beaten 13 ½ lengths, to King D’Argent at Wetherby (2m) in October on his latest start. I was a little bit disappointed with his jumping at Wetherby last time as his jumping at home is good.

Trainer Says:

The only thing we hadn’t done since claiming his was to castrate him but that has been done now. Hopefully, that will bring out further improvement from him but he won’t be running anywhere on Winter ground.

Bright Side Oflife

Form Profile:

Winner of her second point-to-point in Ireland in March.

Trainer Says:

She is a nice big immature mare who is going to take a bit of time. She was very raw when she won her point-to-point and we won’t be rushing her.

Chti Balko (FR)

Form Profile:

Winner of three of his 13 starts and currently rated 142 over hurdles. Finished runner-up, beaten two lengths, to Le Patriote in a handicap hurdle at Ayr (2m) on Saturday.

Trainer Says:

He loves slow ground and ran a cracker at Ayr on Saturday. He is a very solid little horse and too solid for his own good as the handicapper doesn’t give him a chance. I don’t think we will be going chasing with him but I would imagine he would be spending most of his Winter at Haydock Park on bad ground as he seems to like the place.

Classic Impact

Form Profile:

Second in her only point-to-point in Ireland in March 2017.

Trainer Says:

She had a little setback last season but she is a full sister to Wymott and Testify. She is a great big mare with, hopefully, plenty of ability. I would have thought she would start off in novice hurdles but she will want proper soft ground.

Winner of seven of his 21 starts and currently rated 157 over fences. Finished third, beaten only a length and three quarters, to Frodon in the Grade 2 Old Roan Chase at Aintree (2m 4f) in October off his current mark.

Trainer Says:

I was very happy with his run at Aintree the other day. He was more switched off than he used to be and probably got into a little trouble half way down the back but he did finish off his race really well. We are really happy with where we are with him and there’s no great rush.

Trainer Says:

He ran a nice race up at Carlisle on his first run over fences without setting the world alight. He jumped well and was a bit immature and he has had no racing. He is still a big raw horse and he can improve plenty for it – I am looking forward to going again.

Trainer Says:

He has been off a long time with a problem or two so we are going to start him back at some point on a bit of slow ground.

Gaelik Coast

Form Profile:

Winner of his point-to-point in Ireland in April.

Trainer Says:

He is a nice French-bred four-year-old that cost a few quid at the Sales. I am pleased with his work and he was impressive in his point-to-point. He is probably sharp enough to start in his bumper then we will see where we go from there.

Henry's Joy (IRE)

Form Profile:

Winner of one of his 7 starts and currently rated 117. Finished runner-up, beaten two lengths, to The Drone in a novices’ hurdle at Stratford (2m 6 1/2f) when last seen out.

Trainer Says:

He was entered in a couple of novice chases last week but didn’t run because of the ground. He is ready to run and he isn’t a star but he won a £30,000 handicap hurdle last season and he is the sort of horse to pay his way again.

Trainer Says:

He had a good season last season. He is eligible for those Northern Lights races so he might end up at Carlisle possibly. He ran a nice race at Haydock last season and could also go there. He has had lot of problems over time so it is nice to get him back and running well. He hasn’t got that many miles on the clock.

He is a smart horse and was a very useful Northern novice hurdler. He goes on soft ground and has schooled over fences and jumps well. He had a bit of a stress fracture and we could have had him back last Spring but the ground had gone. He could be quite a useful novice chaser if he stays in one piece.

Ormesher

Form Profile:

Winner of two of his 3 starts over hurdles and currently rated 125. Scored by nine lengths from Ventura Magic at Uttoxeter (2m) in July and followed up with a two and a quarter length victory from Ghost Serge at Cartmel (2m 1f) in August. Only fifth, beaten 28 lengths, to Cracker Factory in the Listed Wensleydale Hurdle at Wetherby (2m) on Saturday.

Trainer Says:

He won his first two races in good style but he found the company just a little too warm at Wetherby on Saturday in the Wensleydale Hurdle. He will be as effective on slow ground in the Winter and stays very well and it won’t be long before he wants a bit further. He is a good hard little horse.

Trainer Says:

I was a little disappointed with her at Sedgefield last Thursday but it was her first run back so I probably can’t complain too much. If she had got the run of the race she would probably have won but she has plenty of ability and even though she is only tiny she might be better on a proper track.

Form Profile:

Winner of one of his 5 starts and currently rated 111 over hurdles. Off the mark when short heading Chasseur De Tete in a maiden hurdle at Ayr (2m) in March.

Trainer Says:
