Hughie Morrison Stable Tour

With prize money almost matching last year totals, Hughie Morrison is having a good season and shares his thoughts on his autumn plans.

There was another crossbar rocked in Germany on Saturday when Star Rock was beaten only a head by Sky Full Of Stars in a mile and a half Group 2 event at Baden-Baden and with just a little better luck Hughie Morrison would have already sailed past last years seasonal total of £482,644.

As it is the East Ilsley trainer has already notched up £423,988 in prize money with his 31 winners including six winners in the last fortnight from 29 runners and a 21% strike rate are the sort of figures he will be hoping he can maintain as his team moves into the Autumn. His runners abroad have a similarly impressive record with nine runners all finishing in the first three and reeling in over 260,000 euros in prize money.

Star Rock looks the one to notch an imminent Group success and their looks a strong supporting cast in the staying division with Fun Mac, Marmelo and Nearly Caught.

Hughie said: “We have had a fantastic August and hit a few crossbars and if they had hit the goal then it would looks even better. The horses are in great form and running well and long may it last.”

Hughie kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about his prospects for the rest of the Flat season.

Form Profile:

Winner of three of his 8 starts and currently rated 93. Winner of his three starts on the AW at Kempton and his last success was over a mile and a half there in June when beating Al Hamdany a length and three quarters off a mark of 88.

Trainer Says:

He cracked his knee as a three-year-old and we gelded him and he came back and won two nice races. Nottingham didn’t work out last month but I am not sure it was the trip and we will aim for something like the Courage Cup at Newbury.

Compton Mill

Form Profile:

Winner of five of his 33 starts and currently rated 82. Finished second, beaten two and a quarter lengths, to Dark Pearl at Sandown (1m 2f) on Saturday off his current mark.

Trainer Says:

He is a good fun handicapper over a mile and two furlongs to a mile and half. He doesn’t want fast ground and ran another solid race at Sandown on Saturday. He is a grand horse to own and train.

Fun Mac (GER)

Form Profile:

Winner of five of his 36 starts and currently rated 100. Came closest to victory this term when third, beaten half a length, to Holdthasisgreen in a Listed contest at Maisons-Laffite (1m 7 1/2f) in July.

Trainer Says:

He has been very straightforward this year and we have had no issues with him other than he quite likes a day out and not producing his best – that’s because he is seven and knows how to look after himself. He hardly had a race in the Ebor and I will probably be looking to run him in a conditions race at Salisbury in a couple of weeks time and then there is a listed race at Newmarket. He is also in the Cesarewitch and he might run there too.

Form Profile:

Winner of five of his 16 starts and currently rated 113. Finished runner-up, beaten two and a half lengths, to Holdthasigreen in the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay at Deauville (1m 7f) in August.

Trainer Says:

He has come back in one piece from France where a lot of horses this Summer he has had a lot of racing on fast ground. He deserves a bit of a break and then we are going to tune him up for quarantine to go to Australia for the Melbourne Cup.

Nearly Caught (IRE)

Form Profile:

Winner of eight of his 38 starts and currently rated 107. Gained his last success in the Listed Coral Marathon at Sandown (2m) in July when scoring by a length and a quarter from Platitude.

Trainer Says:

He is ever young and ran another nice race the other day at Deauville when third to Holdthasigreen. He was extremely fresh and well this morning and in good form. If the ground is to his liking he will go to France this weekend for the Prix Gladiateur.

Winner of three of his 27 starts and currently rated 97. Finished fourth, beaten four and a half lengths, to Dubai Horizon at Sandown (1m 2f) on Saturday off his current mark.

Trainer Says:

He is not easy to train as he wants to do everything far too quick but he is in very good form and ran a decent race at Sandown on Saturday when finishing fourth to Dubai Horizon. He was a bit unlucky to bump into one at Ayr on his previous start as everything was dropping just right for him on that occasion but he will hopefully get his head in front before too long.

Form Profile:

Winner of nine of his 80 starts and currently rated 81. Landed the Brighton Mile Challenge Trophy Handicap at Brighton (1m) in August by half a length from Tigerwolf.

Trainer Says:

He is another old horse that is in great form. He ran a good race at Epsom the other day where the race wasn’t run to suit him and he won the Brighton Mile before that. He will stay in training as long as he enjoys it as he wouldn’t make a riding horse.

Form Profile:

Winner of five of his 17 starts and currently rated 73. Returned to winning form on his latest start at Doncaster (7f) in August when beating Tukhoom a neck off a mark of 68.

Trainer Says:

He is a charming horse who did fantastic last year but eventually lost his way a bit. The blinkers rejuvenated him and if I could find a race he would be running this week but I can’t find a seven furlong 0-80 for him.

Star Rock

Form Profile:

Winner of three of her 10 starts and currently rated 104. Finished runner-up, beaten a head, to Sky Full Of Stars in a Group 2 in Baden-Baden (1m 4f) on Saturday.

Trainer Says:

She ran a great race in a Group 2 in Baden-Baden on Saturday over a mile and a half when just touched off. She ran very well at Goodwood previously when I thought she was just unlucky and she deserves to win a good race. She hasn’t been easy to train and you wouldn’t want to run her on firm ground but like all the family she stays and she has got an engine.

Temple Church (IRE)

Form Profile:

Winner of one of his 9 starts and currently rated 94. Finished third, beaten four and a quarter lengths, to Manjaam on his reappearance at York (1m 4f) in May off a mark of 95.

Trainer Says:

Last season he was half decent and we hoped we would have a proper horse but he had a few issues. We didn’t run him in the Summer and he had a splint but he’s in really good form now and we hope to run him next week or the week after.

Three Year Olds

Belated Breath

Form Profile:

Winner of three of her 9 starts and currently rated 81. Finished runner-up, beaten two lengths, to Grey Galleon at Goodwood (6f) in August off a mark of 78.

Trainer Says:

She has obviously been progressive and she ran her race at Goodwood but the ground and the track didn’t really suit her. We are contemplating going up to seven furlongs but she does have plenty of speed.

Form Profile:

Winner of two of her 5 starts and currently rated 88. Returned to winning form last start at Goodwood (1m) in August when beating Hunni a length and a half off a mark of 83.

Trainer Says:

We have always liked her and she is,hopefully, progressive. We were happy with her after her win at Goodwood the other day and we might even try her in a listed race in France in three weeks.

Bossiney Bay (IRE)

Form Profile:

Winner of one of her 7 starts and currently rated 79. Off the mark with a three and a quarter length victory from Tobruk at Leicester (1m 2f) in August off a mark of 72.

Trainer Says:

She won very well at Leicester the other day and the handicapper didn’t give her much in hand to go forward. She has always looked like she will improve as time goes on and she could be alright next year. I don’t think the track suited her at Sandown on Friday and you can put a line through that performance.

Candidate (IRE)

Form Profile:

Winner of one of his 9 starts and currently rated 81. Finished unplaced, beaten 11 ½ lengths, to Ghostwatch in the Melrose Handicap at York (1m 6f) in August off a mark of 82.

Trainer Says:

He is a fun three-year-old handicapper who needs a bit of juice in the ground to be seen to best effect. The ground at York was far too quick for him and he is progressive. We like him and we think he will make a smashing jumper. He might go to the Sales and he has done nothing but improve physically.

Climb Aboard

Form Profile:

No wins from 6 starts and currently rated 75. One of his better efforts when third, beaten a length, to Hasanoanda at Wetherby (1m) in June.

Trainer Says:

He is a horse who works very well but just disappoints on the Racecourse and the penny hasn’t dropped yet. We thought he would run better than he did at Kempton last week.

Form Profile:

Winner of one of his 8 starts and currently rated 98. Has shown progressive form and finished a creditable sixth, beaten two and a half lengths to Ghost Watch in the Melrose Handicap at York (1m 6f) in August off a mark of 96.

Trainer Says:

He has been very good all year and, according to the Official Ratings he improved again at York when he didn’t finish in the placings. We might give him a chance and I’m I two minds what I am going to do with him at the moment. I have no plans and he may have a break and even a Winter break and come back next year as he’s had some hard races.

Deadly Accurate

Form Profile:

Winner of two of his 13 starts and currently rated 73. Returned to winning form when scoring by a head from Cuban Heels at Epsom (7f) in August off his current mark.

Trainer Says:

He surprised us a little when winning at Epsom last week. Jockeys have told us he doesn’t like soft ground and I think he needs a track with variety (ie. Going round a bend) like Epsom or Brighton. I am pleased he won and I think he is better than he has shown.

Trainer Says:

She is a tough little filly who is quite small. She seems to thrive on her racing as she ran another cracker at Beverley on Saturday. She certainly deserves to get her head in front again.

Winner of two of his 8 starts and currently rated 78. Finished runner-up, beaten two lengths, to Extra Elusive latest start at Kempton (1m 4f) in August off a mark of 77.

Trainer Says:

He ran another progressive race in a handicap at Kempton last week. We will probably look for a nice race over a mile and a half on soft ground as he wouldn’t want it too quick.

Quicksand (IRE)

Form Profile:

Finished third, beaten only six and a half lengths, to Lah Ti Dar on her only start at Newbury (1m 2f) in April.

Trainer Says:

She ran very well first time out where if she had known was she was doing she would have finished runner-up to Lah Ti Dar. She had a chip in her knee in that race so we removed it and she is due to run in the next two weeks.

Sod's Law

Form Profile:

No wins from 5 starts and currently rated 73. Finished third, beaten four lengths, to Little Jo on his latest start at Newmarket (1m) in August off a mark of 75.

Trainer Says:

We have been waiting for decent ground all Summer and he ran a nice race at Newmarket and we will see if he can make progress from there. We will wait for the turf with him and, hopefully, he will soon be making his mark.

Trainer Says:

We thought a bit of him last year and he should have beaten Loxley in a maiden at Goodwood where that horse dead heated with Istanbul Sultan. He is a bit fragile and hasn’t got a lot of substance but I think he will get better in time.

Trainer Says:

He is not the brightest horse and it took him four races to realise why he was going to the Racecourse. He is now handicapped to win a race and is progressing albeit slowly. I will run him where I can find a race anywhere from a mile and a quarter to a mile and a half.

Two Year Olds

Indian Viceroy

Form Profile:

Winner of two of his 6 starts and currently rated 85. Off the mark with a two and three quarter length victory from Red Armour at Newmarket (7f) in August and followed up later that month in a novice event at Epsom (7f) when beating Water Diviner half a length.

Trainer Says:

He is a very straightforward two-year-old who is taking his racing extremely well. I don’t think the race was run to suit him and the ground may have been softer than ideal when he won at Epsom. He will probably go for a seven furlong or a mile nursery at a big meeting next time.

Majestic Mac

Form Profile:

Winner of one of his 4 starts and currently rated 70. Off the mark with a two and a quarter length victory from Valentino Sunrise off his current mark at Epsom (7f) last week.

Trainer Says:

He is another charming little two-year-old who has taken a little while to get fully fit. The ground has been too firm and I don’t like training the two-year-olds on anything but turf or at the racecourse so they haven’t been as straight as I would have liked them. As a result it taken two or three runs to get them spot on and it did work in our favour as he won a nice nursery last week at Epsom. Maybe he will improve further as he gains experience.
