Hughie Morrison Stable Tour

With many from his stable entered at Glorious Goodwood, Hughie Morrison is looking forward to the action from the West Sussex course, and shares his thoughts on his teams near to hand engagements

  • Stable Tours

Two decades have passed since Hughie Morrison first took out a trainers licence but in just a few minutes talking to the East Ilsley handler you can immediately ascertain that his hunger for the game hasn’t diminished a jot.

Hughie speaks infectiously about his team and looks forward to Goodwood this week where Sweet Selection takes her place in the now- elevated Group 1 Qatar Goodwood Cup on the opening day and he sends Star Rider for a repeat bid for the marathon Matchbook Betting Exchange Goodwood Stakes Handicap on Wednesday which she landed in great style 12 months ago.

There are several others from his team which will be at the meeting as well, and several staying types that will be in action at the other mid-Summer festivals. Morrison has accrued 29 winners so far this term and he looks forward to that total swelling further as the season progresses.

Hughie said: "The horses have been in form since April and normally we have a bit of a splurge and then it goes quite, but us Downland trainers had a lovely Spring and we have been able to keep the winners coming with eight winners, respectively, in May June and July."

Hughie kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about some of those that can keep the momentum flowing in the coming months.

Admiral's Sunset

Form Profile:

Winner of one of 10 starts and currently rated 80. Scored by seven lengths from Rosie Royale on his reappearance at Bath (1m 5f) in May off a mark of 74 and disappointed in three subsequent outings.

Trainer Says:

She disappointed at Newbury last week and she has the ability. She is a very big angular filly and I think you just have to catch her right when there is juice in the ground. On her day she is pretty decent and she was working very well in the Spring. She has probably gone off the boil and needs a break and will be back at the end of September.

Form Profile:

Winner of three of her 16 starts and currently rated 82. Failed by only a short head behind Jukebox Jive on her latest start at Newbury (2m 2f) in July off a mark of 79.

Trainer Says:

She was probably a bit unlucky at Newbury last time as she is still learning to race in a new running style. I have entered her in a two and a half miles race at Goodwood on Wednesday, as she is locally owned, so it’s nice that we’ve got into the race.

Form Profile:

Winner of three of his 22 starts and currently rated 78. Scored by two lengths from Deinonychus at Leicester (1m 4f) last week off his current mark.

Trainer Says:

He is a soft ground horse and now that he has won over a mile and a half it opens up more options. I was delighted with his win at Leicester and we will see what the handicapper does with him but I don’t see why he won’t stay a mile and six in time. I would expect he would be out in a month’s time.

Winner of two of her 21 starts and currently rated 71. Finished third, beaten a length and a quarter, to Inflexiball at Leicester (1m 4f) last week off her current mark.

Trainer Says:

We are still working her out and she won first time out over a mile at Chelmsford and has been largely disappointing since. She ran ok the other night at Leicester and seems to stay a mile and a quarter. We might even consider whether to run her over hurdles. She loves soft ground.

Form Profile:

Winner of three of her 10 starts and currently rated 84. Unplaced to Inshiraah off her current mark at Newmarket (7f) on Saturday when bidding to complete a hat trick. Had previously scored by a neck from Aljuljalah at Haydock (7f) in July off a mark of 80.

Trainer Says:

She ran a Newmarket on Saturday but the ground was too soft for her. She is a fast ground filly and seven furlongs is her trip. She could be up to nicking some small black type probably abroad.

Form Profile:

Winner of five of his 28 starts and currently rated 103. Scored by a nose from stablemate Vent De Force in a listed event at Maisons-Lafitte (1m 7 1/2f) in July.

Trainer Says:

He seems to be taking his racing far too well at the moment and it was fantastic of him to win in France recently. It was great to win a listed race with him and we’ll try to find the right race for him. Ideally it would be a Group 3 over two miles but I am struggling to find the right contest. I could end up running him in France or at York since there is nothing else and that is why we ran two in the same race at Maisons-Lafitte. That mean we could go for the Lonsdale at York or the Prix Kergorlay.

She ran a nice race at Ascot the other day when finishing third. I am not sure the track will suit her but there is a good prize in the Brighton Mile, a 0-80 in two weeks times which means we will give that a go.

Form Profile:

Winner of two of his 9 starts and currently rated 110. Finished second, beaten a length and a quarter, to Talismanic in a Group 2 at Saint-Cloud (1m 6f) in July.

Trainer Says:

You could say he was a bit unlucky in France the other day and you could say he was too busy talking to the fillies’ in the stalls so he missed the break for the first time. He never really got into a threatening position and will probably go back to Deauville either in the Prix Kergorlay or a mile and a half Group 2 there the following weekend. Longer term targets could in Australia, but you wouldn’t want to run him too many times on fast ground.

He will turn out for his annual visit for the seven furlong 0-95 handicap at Goodwood on Wednesday which he won two years ago. Given that he won at Epsom the other day that is probably him done for the year, but he is enjoying life a lot this year and we have been turning him out and giving him a nice time so you never really know.

Trainer Says:

She goes to Goodwood again this week and ran well off 95 at Royal Ascot which was probably her best run this season. She has been dropped 1lb and goes for the same race she won last year. We had a bit of fun with her over hurdles but my only concern is that it may have knocked the stuffing out of her a bit.

She is in good form and took her race in France the other day well. Given the lack of opportunities of races at two miles or longer we will probably go to the Goodwood Cup with a bit of hope. We might put some wide blinkers on her just to sharpen her up. There is a dream that if she could go up another 5lb in the handicap that we could go for the Melbourne Cup.

Trainer Says:

We finally got him back after two years and he was unlucky not to win at Maisons-Lafitte. He had to get out and was beaten the width of a cigarette paper. He pulled two shoes off and if the race was run ten times he would probably have won it six times. We are struggling to find a race for him since it looks as though he needs two miles nowadays and there are not many races for him at that distance. He could end up in a handicap at York.
