LUCY WADHAM has quite rightly earned a reputation as being a shrewd placer of her horses from a reasonably small team and her talents of getting the very best from her horses was more than reflected when Lady Tiana gave her a Group 2 success in the Lancashire Oaks at Haydock in July.
That mare will soon be off to the December Tattersalls Mares Sales but it has been business as usual at Moulton Paddocks Stables in Newmarket with four winners notched up in the last half of October.
Lucy's 19 winners over jumps notched up nearly £250,000 in prize money last season and, although equally effective on the Flat, her attentions at their most potent during the National Hunt season.
Artifice Sivola looked like he will have more to say this jumps season when making all for a pulsating victory at Fakenham last week and she has several nice bumper horses that look like making the grade when their attentions are turned to hurdling.
Le Reve, Songsmith and Wiesentraum are stable stalwarts who should again pay their way and followers of Lucy's team can expect a profitable Winter ahead.
Lucy kindly spoke to Tony Elves of ATR about her hopes for the jumps season and a sprinkling of horses she hope can make contributions to her winner tally on the AW.
A BOY NAMED SUZI
7 b g Medecis - Classic Coral
Winner of a novice hurdle at Wetherby in December and successful in three of his 24 runs under Rules. Beaten only seven and three quarter lengths when fourth to Glen's Diamond in the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup at York in May 2013. Currently rated 127 over hurdles.
"He is actually having a break at the moment but he will be back in for a Spring campaign and he is probably going to be a dual-purpose horse. We will probably give him a couple of runs over hurdles in the Spring and then go for something like the Chester Cup. He likes going round Wolverhampton and I shouldn't see any reason why he won't go round Chester."
5 b m Le Fou - Etoile du Lion
Winner of one of her three bumpers.
"She won a bumper a few weeks ago at Ludlow very impressively and we are just debating whether to wait for a listed mares' bumper at Huntingdon on December 6 or to go hurdling. We haven't quite decided yet and we will see how she schools in the meantime."
5 b g Dom Alco - Immage
Placed in four of his 9 races. Unplaced in a novice handicap hurdle to Masterplan at Ascot (2m 3 1/2f) on Saturday off his current mark of 120.
"He ran at Ascot on Saturday but it was a bit short form him and he really need three miles. He is really meant to go chasing this year and he has been schooling well over fences. We will give him a couple of runs over hurdles just to warm him up."
5 gr g Dom Alco - Kerrana
Winner of three of his 17 starts. Made all when beating Be On Time 17 lengths at Fakenham (2m 1/2f) off a mark of 113 last week.
"He's a cracking two miles chaser and was very impressive at Fakenham and runs well when fresh. I think he's improving and really operates over fences and is very exciting to watch."
9 b g Paolini - Albarana
Winner of one of his 18 starts. Placed in two of his three outings last season in handicap hurdles. Currently rated105 over hurdles.
"He's really for the conditionals to ride so fits in where he can. We don't have anything special mapped out for him and he wants three miles."
9 b m King's Theatre - Brambleshine
Rated 129 over fences. Several solid efforts last season including when beaten only three and a half lengths by Shotavodka at Haydock (2m 6f) in May 2014. Winner of six of her 31 starts.
"She is in good form and the handicapper has finally given her a chance and dropped her under 130. Hopefully, we can get her winning again - she was so consistent last year without winning and I think this might be her last season. She will be put in foal in the Spring and hopefully we can go out with a win."
3 b f Kyllachy - Elhareer
"She will be running on the AW this Winter. She is a nice filly who had a few niggly problems and couldn't run on the grass but she is something to look forward too."
2 gr c Big Bad Bob - Sense of Greeting
Finished third, beaten half a length, to Chelsea Lad on his debut at Newmarket (7f) last Friday.
"He will probably have one run on the AW before we put him away but we were delighted with his run at Newmarket on Friday. He's a lovely horse and we bought him as a jumper really but he was showing us a lot at home and confirmed that on his debut at Newmarket."
6 b g Rail Link - Lanciana
Winner of four of his 14 starts,. Last success on the Flat at Chelmsford (1m 2f) in April when beating Latin Charm two and a quarter lengths off a mark of 90.
"He has had a bit of a break but is back in now and we are hoping to go two mile chasing with him."
7 br g Milan - Open Cry
Winner of five of his 20 starts. Latest success at Sandown (3m) in January at the end of January when beating Theatrical Star five lengths off a mark of 139. Currently rated 149 over fences.
"He ran in the Sodexo Gold Cup at Ascot (2m 7f 180yds) on Saturday but was never travelling and Daryl Jacob pulled him up before the last. He was a model of consistency last season and hopefully you can draw a line through Saturday's effort. We have half an eye on the Grand National with him and we may give him a try in the Becher Chase to see if he takes to the fences."
5 b g Exit To Nowhere - Letterwoman
Unplaced in three runs under Rules and pulled up in a novices handicap chase at Southwell (3m) in October. Currently rated 106 over fences.
"He ran disappointingly at Southwell recently but he is a nice horse and I'm not quite sure what happened there. He is handicap chasing this year but had a poor start for some reason."
6 ch g Refuse To Bend - Lilakiya
Winner of one of his 7 races over hurdles. Scored by 14 lengths from Aficionado in a handicap hurdle at Fakenham (2m 4f) in January off a mark of 117. Currently rated 127 over hurdles.
"He is hopefully going to run at Sandown at weekend. He is a handicap hurdler from two to two and a half miles. He has had a nice break and has come back in good order. Every jockey who got off him last year said there's a good race in him and if he get his conditions he could crop up somewhere - he's not handicapped out of it."
5 b m Presenting - Cash And New
"She is a nice unraced mare who will probably go to Lingfield for a mares bumper on November 10. We had her last year and she was working well and had a little niggle but she's good now and ready to go."
4 b f Midnight Legend - Kentucky Sky
Winner of one of her 3 starts. Scored by seven lengths from Actinpieces in a bumper at Fakenham (2m) in April.
"She won her bumper at Fakenham in the Spring nicely and came in late. I think we are going to take her to Cheltenham for the listed fillies bumper on November 14 and then she is going to go hurdling after that."
6 gr g Sir Percy - Tussah
Won four times on the flat, unraced over hurdles.
"We have never schooled him over hurdles but he is going to be schooled and he might have one run on the AW whilst he's doing that. He would be a good ground hurdler and we might only get one run into him and then have to wait for the Spring."
2 b f Sir Percy - Nicola Bella
Unplaced on her debut at Newmarket (7f) in August.
"She has one run on the July course in August and is having a break but will run on the AW in the New Year. A mile will be her trip."
5 b g Midnight Legend - Loose Morals
Winner of his only bumper at Fakenham (2m) in October.
"He won first time out the other day at Fakenham and is a lovely big strong horse. He might have another go in a bumper before hurdling but he is schooling well."
5 b m Midnight Legend - Craughwell Suas
Winner of one of her three starts. Off the mark in a bumper at Southwell (1m 7 1/2f) when beating Field of Glory three quarters of a length.
"She won a bumper at Southwell in May then had a rather disappointing run in a novice hurdle at Stratford in June. She will run in a mares hurdle somewhere in the next couple of weeks."
ROAD TO FREEDOM
6 b g Revoque - Go Classic
Winner of one of his 11 starts. Scored by 17 lengths from Ballycamp in a novices hurdle at Southwell in May and beaten only a head by Milgen Bay in a handicap chase at Fakenham (2m 5f) last week off his current mark of 110 over fences.
"He was beaten a head at Fakenham last week and I am hoping the handicapper isn't going to kill him for that. He was a slightly unlucky horse last year and he was handicapped to win last Wednesday but we will have to see what the handicapper does with him."
5 b m Notnowcato - Arruhan
Placed in two of her four bumpers.
"She is a lovely mare and was placed in two of her bumpers last year. She goes to Towcester on Thursday for a mares hurdle."
7 b g Librettist - Venus Rising
Winner of five of his 36 starts under Rules including three wins over hurdles. Currently rated 125 over hurdles.
"He has been running a bit on the Flat during the Summer and he is going to have one run over hurdles maybe at Sandown and then could have a break and go chasing in the Spring."
4 b f King's Theatre - Coolgreaney
Winner of one of her two bumpers scoring by 11 from Black Sam in her debut at Bangor (2m 1/2f) in March.
"She is a three parts sister to Baby Shine and is waiting for the fillies bumper at Cheltenham on November 14 before going hurdling."
9 ch g Next Desert - Wiesenblute
Winner of six of his 28 starts. Enjoyed back-to-back victories in handicap chase at Fakenham (3m) and Warwick (3m 1/2f) last October. Currently rated 138 over fences.
"He is getting on in years and could do with some respite from the handicapper but will probably run at Sandown on Sunday week."
A BOY NAMED SUZI - well capable of adding to his score over hurdles before returning to the Flat.
ARTIFICE SIVOLA - looked like he had a lot more to offer when jumping his rivals senseless at Fakenham last week.
BABY SHINE - reasonably handicapped now and can resume winning ways.
GREGARIOUS - super effort on his debut at Newmarket last week and an AW maiden looks his for the taking.
POTTERS LEGEND - looks capable of winning again in bumper company before enjoying success over hurdles.
ROAD TO FREEDOM - edged out at Fakenham last week and can soon go one better over fences.
