WELCOME to our Eyecatchers column. Every Tuesday form expert Alan Thomson pinpoints horses primed to strike in the next few weeks, if not days. Remember, you can add Alan's weekly updates to your ATR Tracker.

(Southwell, 28 November)

Installed overnight favourite for this middle-distance handicap but was a significant drifter on the exchanges.

Swift Cedar was held up from his wide draw and travelled into the race quite strongly, with Fran Berry delivering his challenge out wide in the straight.

That effort petered out rather disappointingly, with Swift Cedar fading into fifth, and the gelding ran is if he may just have needed this run on his favoured Fibresand.

(Wolverhampton, 29 November)

Marco Botti’s filly recovered from a tardy break to take up a challenging position off the home bend in this mile Fillies’ Median Auction Stakes.

Heeyaam briefly struck the front inside the final furlong but inexperience cost her the race as John Gosden’s more street-wise West Palm Beach edged her out in a driving finish.

This wasn’t a great contest but Heeyaam should make up into a nice three-year-old handicapper.

(Kempton, 29 November)

A quality field assembled for the Listed 32Red Wild Flower Stakes and Red Vernon put his best foot forward to snap a frustrating losing sequence.

Mountain Bell couldn’t quicken with the principals when they injected speed down the straight but stayed on into fourth spot, beaten less than two lengths.

Ralph Beckett’s filly had produced a similar slightly laboured  performance on her belated return in the St Simon Stakes at Newbury the previous month and ideally needs either a stronger pace to attack or a slightly longer distance than 1m 4f.

(Newbury, 2 December)

Gave forlorn chase to impressive winner Overtown Express in the 2m Ladbrokes Handicap Chase but stuck on gamely for second spot.

Matt Sheppard’s gelding hit a purple patch back in February/March when rattling off a hat-trick of victories and he will be unlucky if running into such an improving type in future.

(Doncaster, 2 December)

Dexcite hadn’t been spotted since June and this was an encouraging reappearance.

Tom George’s gelding was anchored at the back of the field but made steady headway before a blunder two out halted his momentum.

The six-year-old came home in fourth behind favourite Irish Roe and this dual winner in May/June clearly relishes a sound surface.

(Plumpton, 4 December)

Robbie Dunne rode a confident race on Tom Lacey’s easy winner and apart from fiddling the last flight Jester Jet was most proficient at her hurdles.

She scored three times last spring, all on good ground, and returned from a 162-day break to chase home Graceful Legend at Ascot last month.

Further success is on the cards.
