WELCOME to our Eyecatchers column. Every week Alan Thomson pinpoints horses primed to strike in the next few weeks, if not days. Remember, you can add Alan's weekly updates to your ATR Tracker.
LEAN ON PETE ATR Tracker
(Wolverhampton, 2 December)
Has fallen to his lowest mark in two years but there's still a spring in his step judged on this encouraging third to well-backed Persona Grata. The first three pull clear and with Lean On Pete equally proficient at Southwell, Ollie Pears has options available this winter.
LORAINE ATR Tracker
(Kempton, 4 December)
Plenty of punters were happy to play up their winnings from 10 days previously when Jamie Osborne's filly had scooted home at Wolverhampton. However, Loraine was always trapped very wide from an unfavourable draw and although closing into third, she was caught too far out of her ground. Loraine wasn't beaten by her 6lb penalty and clearly remains in tip-top form.
LADY OF CAMELOT ATR Tracker
(Lingfield, 5 December)
John Gosden's Montjeu filly made a promising start to her career in what looked a hot one-mile maiden won by Luca Cumani's market leader Dreamlike. Rab Havlin's mount had to do a lot of early running to overcome her wide berth but she still held a handy position as the field swung for home. However, earlier exertions took their toll as she edged off a true line under pressure before fading into fifth. Lady Of Camelot will have learned plenty from this introduction.
GREAT TRY ATR Tracker
(Aintree, 6 December)
The winner of a Southwell bumper on his racecourse debut in February, Great Try is a typical Trevor Hemmings jumping type in the making. Always travelling comfortably on the heels of winner Ballybolley, the Paul Nicholls-trained gelding bungled the third last, losing vital impetus and ground, which he was unable to recover. We'll hear more of Great Try in due course.
ROCK THE WORLD ATR Tracker
(Punchestown, 7 December)
Jessica Harrington found a suitable novice hurdle for her talented six-year-old and Rock The World duly supplemented his recent Down Royal maiden success with plenty to spare. Rated 123 here, the gelding's long-term future lies over fences, but there could be a decent handicap hurdle to be won along the way.
EVIDENT ATR Tracker
(Kempton, 8 December)
Slowly away in this Class 5 handicap won by favourite Gracious George and trailed the field before staying on into sixth. The four-year-old raced against the far rail where recent evidence suggests the track is riding at its deepest, and Tony Carroll is just the man to find a small race for Evident. This horse won his maiden for Jeremy Noseda at Lingfield in June, 2013 and consequently paid the price for beating an 80-rated rival. The handicapper has finally relented and 68 is an attractive looking mark if Carroll can galvanise Evident.
