A SEXTET TO FOLLOW FROM NEWMARKET'S JULY FESTIVAL

SYMBOLIZATION
(Newmarket, 12 July)

Heavily supported into favouritism, Symbolization could only muster a rather tame fifth behind Naval Intelligence in this one-mile Listed contest.

Charlie Appleby’s colt moved up with menace over a furlong out but hung fire under pressure.

Some headgear might help or perhaps Symbolization was feeling the fast ground.

ZAAKI
(Newmarket, 13 July)

Sir Michael Stoute’s colt was sloppy out of the gate at Royal Ascot when third to Hunting Horn in the Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes and he again missed a beat in this strong Class 2 handicap.

Ryan Moore was content to sit in rear before angling for a run three out.

Zaaki burst through a gap a furlong out and it looked all over bar the shouting until Communique swooped under Silvestre De Sousa to nut him on the line.

Zaaki was conceding 12lb to the winner, so this was a cracking effort.

PRETTY POLLYANNA
(Newmarket, 13 July)

Frankie Dettori landed himself in hot water in a rough race, incurring a ten-day ban, and consequently grabbed the headlines in a controversial renewal of the bet365-sponsored Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes.

However, nothing should detract from seven lengths winner Pretty Pollyanna, with Michael Bell’s filly turning the Albany Stakes form on its head.

Royal Ascot paddock watchers had observed that Pretty Pollyanna was still slightly unfurnished and she has clearly progressed in the interim.

It’s more than 25 years since another Bill Gredley filly, User Friendly, won Classics fame and the owner/breeder has found another good‘un.

The Lowther Stakes at York’s Ebor meeting would be her next obvious big-race target.

MUKALAL
(Newmarket, 14 July)

Cut out a lot of the donkey work under the stands’ rail in the bet365 Bunbury Cup but Marcus Tregoning’s gelding hoisted the white flag when joined over two out.

This was disappointing given his progressive profile last season when winning at Lingfield, Wolverhampton and Ascot.

Mukalal had a wind procedure over the winter and didn’t shape at all badly in the Royal Hunt Cup.

He raced on the slowest ground (well watered) and is worth another chance.

MAKZEEM
(Newmarket, 14 July)

A hatful of winners traditionally come out of the Bunbury Cup and Roger Charlton’s Makzeem bounced back to form in fifth.

Ryan Moore manoeuvred him into a challenging position over a furlong out and Makzeem looked a real danger before fading out of the places close home.

He hadn’t beat a horse home in two starts in May, so this bold show will have encouraged connections.

Makzeem is probably a few pounds too high in the handicap and the employment of a useful apprentice could see him scoop a nice pot later in the season.

FINAL
(Newmarket, 14 July)

Wasn’t seen until mid-June but Mark Johnston’s gelding has had four fairly quick runs, showing gradual improvement each time.

Joe Fanning switched him off just behind the leaders and although Final couldn’t match the finishing burst of well-backed Drill, he was staying on nicely at the finish.

The six-year-old has winning form on the all-weather, so that is another option
