WELCOME to our Eyecatchers column. Every week Alan Thomson pinpoints horses primed to strike in the next few weeks, if not days. Remember, you can add Alan's weekly updates to your ATR Tracker.

(Newbury, 16 December)
An exciting young hurdler for Harry Fry and Charmix shows a very willing attitude. He built on his Wetherby success in October by running useful Modus close at this track next time and again impressed by hammering Big Chief Benny by 17 lengths in this 2m2f contest. The five-year-old galloped on relentlessly down the long straight and appears to have a bright future.

(Newbury, 16 December)
A three-year-old daughter of Yeats, stamina will probably be Little Miss Poet’s forte so this 1m 4f trip in the ‘Junior’ bumper was always likely to prove on the sharp side. That didn’t stop punters piling into Philip Hobbs’s filly but the 13-8 favourite, held up early, couldn’t quite match the pace of strong-traveller Woolstone One. The pair pulled 30 lengths clear of the rest and look useful.

GO FAR ATR Tracker
(Wolverhampton, 18 December)
Only five years of age but seems to have been around a long while for Alan Bailey. The Ayr Bronze Cup winner has form around here but Go Far endured a stinking trip from his terrible draw, trapped four or five horses wide almost throughout. He trailed home in 10th spot behind Spring Loaded in this valuable six-furlong handicap but is better than this showing.

(Ascot, 19 December)
Up 7lb for his comfortable course and distance triumph on better ground at the end of October and he produced a determined challenge in the straight, arguably looking the most likely winner approaching the last. Unfortunately for his backers, Pendra threw in a stuttering leap before folding disappointingly on the run-in to finish out of the money. Perhaps the holding surface was to blame for his tame capitulation, or he may have been feeling something physically, and he will probably be given a break (best fresh) before making his fourth visit to Cheltenham in March (fifth behind The Druids Nephew in last season’s Ultima Business Solutions Handicap).

(Ascot, 19 December)
The Ladbroke was run at a blistering gallop in a cracking time and that appeared to catch out Hurricane Hollow. The five-year-old was well in arrears following a sloppy jump at the first flight and only stayed on at the one pace into ninth for Bridget Andrews, his pilot when lifting a conditional jockeys’ handicap at Cheltenham in April for new handler Dan Skelton. A three-time winner in the north for Keith Dalgleish, Hurricane Hollow had shaped very well on a sounder surface at Chepstow in early October when third to Court Minstrel and possesses a good turn of foot on drier ground.

(Chelmsford City, 21 December)
A superb all-weather specialist, having recorded victories at Kempton, Lingfield, Wolverhampton, Southwell and Chelmsford City. Realize was raised 4lb for his fine course victory over Mont Ras 11 days earlier and he probably posted a career-best in chasing home hot favourite Cold As Ice. The five-year-old served Hughie Morrison and Kevin Ryan with distinction, and looks sure to give current handler Stuart Williams further paydays. The addition of Newcastle to the all-weather roster next year will provide even more opportunities.
