WELCOME to our Eyecatchers column. Every week Alan Thomson pinpoints horses primed to strike in the next few weeks, if not days. Remember, you can add Alan's weekly updates to your ATR Tracker.
DARSHINI ATR Tracker
(Goodwood, 21 May)
Made a winning seasonal return at Doncaster in April and was well backed to defy a 6lb rise. Sir Michael Stoute's three-year-old took a while to find his full stride but was closing down Resonant at the line. Darshini was slightly intimidated close home, with the winner edging left under pressure, and this was a solid run.
PINTURA ATR Tracker
(Ayr, 21 May)
Clocked up plenty of miles earlier in his career for Mick Channon, David Simcock and Kevin Ryan, but has been raced more sparingly in recent times. The eight-year-old was having his first run for Alistair Whillans in this mile handicap and although no match for in-form Fort Bastion, Pintura finished nicely clear of the rest. He started off the 2013 season as a 108-rated horse, so this mark of 90 could well be exploited by his shrewd Borders trainer.
ERIK THE RED ATR Tracker
(Haydock, 22 May)
After three maiden runs, Kevin Ryan's gelding will be of interest stepping into handicap company. Erik The Red proved no match for Godolphin's progressive Racing History but he had the others well beaten off. A mile would appear to be his trip at present.
CISCO BOY ATR Tracker
(Musselburgh, 22 May)
Tim Easterby has his team in splendid nick and Cisco Boy, fresh from landing a nice touch at Wolverhampton 11 days earlier, ran another race full of credit in chasing home Mustaqbal. Settled off the pace from his wide draw, Cisco Boy arrived on the scene with every chance but was just anchored by his 6lb penalty. He is improving with every run.
MISTER UNIVERSE ATR Tracker
(Goodwood, 23 May)
The track was well watered as usual and this may have accounted for a slightly disappointing effort from Mark Johnston's 7-2 favourite. Mister Universe had fairly bolted up at Ascot a fortnight earlier when aggressive tactics were employed, but he was simply outgunned (fifth) in an exciting event won in game fashion by stablemate Enlace. Johnston's three-year-olds often bounce back quickly.
MEZZOTINT ATR Tracker
(Catterick, 23 May)
Quite well exposed as a six-year-old and didn't pull up any trees in finishing sixth to Fieldgunner Kirkup. However, Mezzotint stumbled at the start before making steady ground down the straight. Eventually fading under tender handling, Mezzotint is just the type to pop up when the Stuart Williams stable hits winning ways.
