WELCOME to our Eyecatchers column. Every week Alan Thomson pinpoints horses primed to strike in the next few weeks, if not days. Remember, you can add Alan's weekly updates to your ATR Tracker.

MR SHEKELLS ATR Tracker
(Newmarket, 25 July)
After three duck eggs in maidens, Mr Shekells scored on his nursery debut at Leicester. Reappearing here eight days later, the gelding was unable to cope with his 6lb penalty in stronger company, but is going the right way at a modest level.

GLORIOUS EMPIRE ATR Tracker
(Ascot, 26 July)
Took a tug in the early stages of this strong three-year-old Class 2 handicap and that may have been his undoing in the closing stages as the gelding just missed out on third place. Ed Walker has brought him along steadily and there was plenty to like about his earlier victory on soft ground at Newmarket. Glorious Empire may require a bit of juice in the ground to show his very best.

YOU'RE FIRED ATR Tracker
(Ascot, 26 July)
Punters sent Karl Burke's colt off favourite in the same event as Glorious Empire but he hit a flat spot before sticking on into fifth behind Mange All. Winners will come out of this race and You're Fired can recoup losses back on deeper ground.

REDVERS ATR Tracker
(Ascot, 26 July)
Never sighted in the Longines International (16th) but connections would have been dismayed by the racecourse deluge 24 hours earlier as Redvers is a real top of the ground specialist. The six-year-old has a fine record in late summer/autumn handicaps when the track is slick, as he showed when beating Gabriel's Lad at Ascot last September off a similar rating. Ed Vaughan doubtless will be following a similar path, weather permitting.

HAWKEYETHENOO ATR Tracker
(Ascot, 26 July)
Another to contest the International (9th) and just failed to find the necessary finishing kick to threaten the principals. Jim Goldie kept him busy on the all-weather at Lingfield during the winter, before pitching him into some very tough Group assignments. Freshened up here after a nice break, Hawkeyethenoo just needs some respite from the handicapper to become competitive again at this level. The stable does well with these old boys when the assessor eventually drops them, as 12-year-old Nanton proved so emphatically at Doncaster last week.

WEDDING RING ATR Tracker
(Newmarket, 26 July)
Godolphin filly races almost exclusively at Newmarket (winner three times) and she proved no match for Sir Michael Stoute's less exposed Bragging. Wedding Ring ran on steadily into third from an isolated position (drawn 11 of 11) and this performance can be marked up a few pounds.
