Thunder Call made a seamless step up to seven furlongs with a taking victory in the Schweppes Handicap at Ascot.

The Pinatubo colt had been left with too much to do in the Shergar Cup Sprint when chasing home Red Spells Danger last month but he was much closer to front end back at the Berkshire circuit.

The William Haggas-trained even-money favourite was pushed along to hit the front at the furlong marker and pulled away in the closing 100 yards to run out a straightforward two-and-three-quarter-length winner.

Haggas said: “He’s progressive and enjoyed the step up in trip, but I’m not sure whether the others were slowing down. Addison Grey (fourth) is a six-furlong horse and he was.

“This horse should have won the Shergar Cup when he was too far back and the winner got away from him.”

Gavriel (5-2) made his handicap debut a winning one in the Silent Pool Gin ‘Confined’ Handicap.

The John and Thady Gosden-trained Frankel colt, a general 8-1 second-favourite for the Cambridgeshire, enjoyed a smooth passage up the rail to gallop on and come clear by one and three-quarter lengths from Balzac.

Thady Gosden said: “The gap was a nice surprise, it came early and he quickened up great.

“He doesn’t quicken up like that at home but he’s a thoroughly genuine horse.

“You’d like to think he’ll keep improving as he’s still relatively inexperienced and it was his first run in a handicap.”

The Edward Bethell-trained Applesandpears (25-1) went from last to first to head True Test by a neck in the Download The tote App British EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap.

Julie Camacho’s Havana Blue (11-2) secured back-to-back victories in the Club26 Handicap and the concluding tote.co.uk For Racing & Sports Betting Handicap went to Stuart Williams’ Maelstrom (14-1).
