Each-way betting at Royal Ascot
An each-way bet is essentially two bets in one. The first is a bet on your chosen horse to win. The second is a bet on your chosen horse to place. If you choose a stake of £1, your total stake will be £2. £1 on the horse to win, and another £1 on it to place.
Obviously a win means finishing first. A place means finishing either first, or in one of a number of places – typically 2nd, 3rd or sometimes 4th, depending on the number of runners. Make sure you check the place terms before making your bet.
The place terms for your bet include, the number of places the bookmaker will pay out on, and the fraction of the odds you will get if the horse does place. Usually 1/4 or 1/5. In each-way betting, if your horse wins, you will win both the ‘win’ and ‘place’ parts of your bet. But if it only places, you will lose the ‘win’ part of your bet and win the ‘place’ part of your bet.

Royal Ascot Frequently Asked Questions
How are Royal Ascot tips chosen?
Royal Ascot tips are usually based on a combination of recent form, race conditions, draw, ground, trainer and jockey records, historical trends and the likely odds available. For major races, expert tipsters will also assess how each runner is expected to handle the distance, pace of the race and unique demands of Ascot Racecourse.
What is the difference between ante-post tips and race-day tips?
Ante-post Royal Ascot tips are selections made before the final declarations, often at bigger prices but with the risk that the horse may not run. Race-day tips are made once the final field, draw, going and market are clearer, which can make them more informed but sometimes at shorter odds.
Which Royal Ascot races attract the most betting interest?
Royal Ascot betting interest is strong across all five days, but major Group 1 races such as the Queen Anne Stakes, Prince Of Wales’s Stakes, Gold Cup, Coronation Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes are among the headline contests. Competitive handicaps such as the Royal Hunt Cup, Britannia Stakes and Wokingham Stakes can also be popular with each-way punters.
How important is the draw when following Royal Ascot tips?
The draw can be an important factor in Royal Ascot tips, particularly in races run on the straight course. A high or low draw advantage can emerge depending on field size, pace, ground conditions and where the strongest early speed is positioned, so draw analysis is often considered alongside form and odds.
Do Royal Ascot trends help when picking winners?
Royal Ascot trends can help narrow down a field by highlighting common traits among past winners, such as age, recent form, previous Ascot experience, trainer records or prep races. However, trends should support a selection rather than replace form study, as every renewal depends on the strength and shape of the current field.
What should I consider before backing a Royal Ascot tip?
Before backing a Royal Ascot tip, consider the horse’s current form, race conditions, draw, ground, trainer comments, odds and whether the price represents value. It is also worth checking final declarations, non-runner terms and any changes in going before placing a bet.
