Ben Pauling has already had a season he will never forget with his personal best prize money tally already exceeded, with £1,369,956 gathered from his current 74 winners but a return to Festival glory would be very much the icing of the cake for the Naunton Downs trainer.

Shakem Up’Arry provided Pauling with a fourth Festival winner when landing the TrustATrader Handicap Chase in 2024 but owner Harry Redknapp has much bigger fish to fry this time around with The Jukebox Man looking to top up his King George VI success in the Gold Cup while Pauling has plenty of other strong contenders in the supporting events.

Pauling said: “I think this is the best team I’ve had going into a Festival and I am determined not to take horses that I don’t think are going to do well. With Aintree being a proper month after Cheltenham you can roll the dice with a lot of them again - you don’t have to be afraid of saving them for Aintree this year.

“There would be horses that are going there which would be our third, fourth, fifth best chance of the week and would normally be leading the way and that in itself says we have a better team.

“It would be a bit of a disappointment if we didn’t’ come away with a winner.”

With his team almost totally primed for the most exciting four days of the National Hunt season, Pauling kindly spoke to Tony Elves for attheraces.com at a press day at his base just over 13 miles from Cheltenham racecourse.
