2026 Randox Grand National
Even the Grand National has years where one can confidently narrow the race to a much smaller group of potential winners. I certainly don’t think that is the case this year, however, and there were a number of horses on my initial shortlist. Last year’s first three all have solid chances again, especially I Am Maximus (second) and Grangeclare West (third). If Jagwar can get into a rhythm early, he could well run a big race, as I certainly think he’s a better horse than a mark of 152 (obviously as he’s rated 157, and therefore 5lb well-in). Cheekpieces could also be a great addition for him, as he’s certainly a “thinker”.
However, the two that appealed most at the current prices are Stellar Story and MONTY’S STAR. The former may need some rain, so I’ve gone for the latter at this point as my initial play in the race. A classy animal on his day, I think there is some scope in his mark of 159, and I really like his campaign this season. I’m willing to forgive his effort in the Irish Gold Cup last time, as the yard was having a quiet spell and the ground was softer than ideal. His run in the Savills at Christmas really caught my eye though, and he has classy back form too, including a fourth in last year’s Gold Cup and a second in the 2024 Brown Advisory.
Henry de Bromhead’s nine-year-old is usually an excellent jumper, and I’d be very disappointed if he isn’t at least involved in the latter stages here. His lack of wins is a slight concern, but I think that is more down to the type of races he has been running in, having fallen just short at the top level. Monty’s Star has the perfect profile for a “modern-day” National, and at around 16/1 I think he’s a very fair price.
