Division heads to Deauville looking for change of luck

William Haggas-trained sprinter aimed at Prix Maurice de Gheest after luckless run at Newmarket

Division will head to Deauville for the Prix Maurice de Gheest in search of an elusive strike at Group One level having seen his chances once again hindered by a wide draw when fifth in the July Cup.

William Haggas’ speedster has been ultra-consistent this term, only once outside the first three and never beaten more than three lengths in multiple eye-catching performances in defeat, most recently in Newmarket’s sprinting highlight.

After getting no help from the draw in the July Cup with jockey James Doyle having to track across from a low berth, connections are keeping their fingers crossed for a stroke of luck in France on August 9.

Richard Brown, racing adviser for owners Wathnan Racing, said: “Division came out of the July Cup well it’s just a little disappointing the way things panned out with the draw and how the race played out.

“We’ll point to the Prix Maurice de Gheest with him now and hopefully we can get a draw in the middle with him at some stage as he keeps getting put out on a wing which doesn’t overly suit him, he’s just not getting a bit of luck with the draw at the moment.

“I think it was still a big run in the July Cup and he’s had to come all the way across which I was delighted he did as those drawn two, three and four finished last, second last and third last.

“So he definitely got himself into the right position but when you are having to take back and get across you are giving away plenty of ground and I thought he ran a big race under the circumstances.”
