A fantastic five-timer at Punchestown on Wednesday has seen Willie Mullins grab the lead in the race for the Irish trainers’ championship.
Gordon Elliott began the week with a lead of over 500,000 euros on Mullins, and he still had a cushion of 405,839 euros going into the second day of the Festival meeting.
However, Elliott saw his lead obliterated as Mullins enjoyed a stellar evening, highlighted by the victory of Bellshill in the Coral Punchestown Gold Cup.
Stablemate Djakadam finished second in that Grade One feature to ensure another chunk of cash was added to the Mullins coffers, while Tornado Flyer then led home a one-two-three for the yard in the Racing Post Champion I.N.H. Flat Race For The Conyngham Cup.
Added to Next Destination’s victory in the other Grade One of the day, the Irish Daily Mirror Novice Hurdle, and Pravalunga in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel Hurdle, Mullins was back in front for the first time this season, leading by 31,661 euro.
