Hughie Morrison is looking to land the Darley Prix Kergorlay for the third year running when he saddles the last two winners, Marmelo and Nearly Caught, in the staying contest over 15 furlongs at Deauville on Sunday.

Successful in 2016, Nearly Caught was fourth behind his stablemate 12 months ago and was only beaten a head at Maisons-Laffitte by Holdthasigreen, who re-opposes.

“There are no other opportunities for Nearly Caught and he loves going right-handed,” said Morrison.

“We went to France the other day being told they were going on a right-handed course and they went left-handed.

“He hated every moment but he ran an absolute stormer. He probably had a hard race as a result but if we don’t run him now when do we run him.”

Marmelo is having this race as part of his preparation for the Melbourne Cup at Flemington in November.

“We are just feeling our way to Melbourne with him,” said the East Ilsley handler.

“On the form-book he has not improved as the handicapper dropped him a pound after his last race because of the relative weights for the Ebor.

“He is a happy horse and we want to keep him happy and fresh before he goes to Melbourne so I’ve not over-galloped him – but we wouldn’t anyway in these conditions.

“We are going to France with Marmelo and will be trying as hard as possible but we’ve got to be realistic about Australia.”

Renneti, runner-up to Pallasator in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot, takes his chance for Willie Mullins, while the home team includes the Andre Fabre-trained pair of Aim True and Casterton.
