Haydock Park has announced next month’s renewal of its Grade Two Champion Hurdle Trial will be run in the name of multiple winner The New One.
Nigel Twiston-Davies retired his stalwart after The New One pulled up in his 40th race – Saturday’s Unibet International Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Among the 10-year-old’s 20 career victories were five at Haydock – where he won four consecutive editions of the Champion Hurdle Trial from 2015 to 2018.
His name will therefore be directly associated with the race once more in the new year, it has been announced.
A press release from the course read: “Haydock Park Racecourse announces today that the Unibet-sponsored Grade Two Champion Hurdle Trial staged over one mile and seven and a half furlongs on Saturday January 19 2019 is being renamed the ‘The New One Unibet Hurdle’, registered as The Champion Hurdle Trial in memory of the recently retired hurdler.”
Twiston-Davies said: “The New One was unbeaten five times he ran at Haydock, so we love the racecourse – and we are hoping to find another one to take his place!
“We’re excited to bring him up to parade on the day, and a shame he won’t be running in the race.”
