Alan King admitted it is unlikely Elgin will line up in Saturday’s bet365 Old Newton Cup at Haydock.
The six-year-old is currently the 8-1 favourite with the race sponsor following victories in novice events at Chelmsford and Catterick on his last two starts.
However, King does not expect conditions will suit his charge, who was also a Grade Two winner over hurdles during the winter and finished fifth in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.
King said: “Elgin won’t be going to Haydock unless the weather changes, which looks unlikely.
“We are desperate for some rain for him and we have kept him entered up in case the weather changes, but I am not realistically expecting it to change ahead of Saturday.”
