Ian Williams is leaning towards running Magic Circle in the Lonsdale Cup on his next start after confirming he will not be supplemented for the Ascot Gold Cup.
The Alvechurch handler has earmarked Group Two prize at York in August as a potential port of call for the son of Makfi, before sending him to Australia for a shot at the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 6.
After running out a decisive winner of the Chester Cup on his debut for Williams, the six-year-old backed it up last time out with an impressive victory in the Group Three Henry II Stakes at Sandown.
Williams said: “I can tell you that Magic Circle will not be running in the Ascot Gold Cup. The plan is to work back from the Melbourne Cup and he will probably have one run here before going out there.
“I thought it was a very solid performance at Sandown and it was a great run to meet the qualifying criteria for the Melbourne Cup.
“The priority is the Melbourne Cup. It is all about getting the horse to the Melbourne Cup in good shape.
“The Lonsdale Cup fits in well and that’s the more likely race he will run in.”
