Jamie Spencer was coolness personified as he brought Agrotera from last to first in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Ed Walker’s filly was the 11-2 favourite having opened her account at the third attempt at Windsor last month.

She made her handicap debut from an attractive mark of 88 and Spencer was happy to play the waiting game, with Agrotera still at the very rear of the field racing inside the final three furlongs.

However, she began to go through the field like a knife through butter soon after and while Perfection would not go down without a fight after ploughing a lone furrow on the far side of the track, Agrotera eventually wore her down and won decisively by two and three-quarter lengths.

Perfection was run out of the places close home, with Ortiz, Escape The City and Desert Diamond grabbing second, third and fourth respectively.

Owner Bjorn Neilsen was enjoying his second Royal Ascot success of the week following the Gold Cup triumph of Stradivarius.

He said: “She’s been working very well and she’s a good filly.

“She was a bit warm beforehand, which tempered my enthusiasm a bit, but she was different gear there.

“Even though I thought we had a bit in hand, you never really know.

“She came from last to first and Jamie gave her a great ride.”

Walker said: “It’s just epic. My assistant asks every year what the target is and I always say a Group One winner and a Royal Ascot winner.

“This is everything. The whole world is watching and it is so hard getting winners here.

“We’ve had a tough few weeks. We’ve been hitting the crossbar left, right and centre. We’ve had fancied horses getting beat. Coming into this meeting we hadn’t had a winner for two weeks and we’ve run 30-odd horses.

“As a trainer you are a constant worrier and it doesn’t do your confidence much good taking on the world’s best.”

He added: “We knew we had very good filly and we knew we were given a good mark on 88 and she proved that today.

“I only really doubted her when she got hot and warm in the preliminaries and that worried me a bit. That will be her last handicap.

“He (Neilsen) has been a great supporter of the last 18 months. He is a great man to train for.”
