Withhold might have the Melbourne Cup on his agenda if all goes to plan in the Stobart Rail & Civils Northumberland Plate at Newcastle on Saturday.
An easy winner of the Cesarewitch last autumn, when landing a big gamble, Roger Charlton’s stayer has again been well backed to add another big pot.
The lightly-raced five-year-old has been raised 12lb but Charlton’s son and assistant, Tom, feels there is more to come.
“I wouldn’t be worried about the trip,” he said.
“He’s had a bad scope on and off all spring which is why he hasn’t been out before now.
“He seems in good nick. It’s a tough race to win. He should be well handicapped but I think there’ll be others who are pretty well handicapped.”
While Withhold has never raced on a Tapeta surface before, that is not expected to cause any issues.
Tom Charlton told At The Races “He works on the Polytrack at home. He’s a very clean mover and I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t act on it.
“We thought about Ascot but he would have only gone there if he could have had a prep in the Sagaro, the Melbourne Cup is still in the back of our minds so we’ve plenty of big targets for him.”
