Deserved success for Elsworth ace

Sir Dancealot showed no signs of a quick turnaround catching up with him as he claimed the first Pattern-race success of his career in the Betway Criterion Stakes at Newmarket.

After finishing a respectable seventh in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, the David Elsworth-trained gelding appreciated the step back up to seven furlongs as he returned to winning ways in the Group Three contest.

Anchored at the rear of the field, the four-year-old came with a power-packed run to sweep past his rivals around a furlong from home before holding So Beloved at bay by a length, to complete a double for winning jockey Gerald Mosse.

Elsworth said of the 100-30 winner: “This horse went up to Scotland (Hamilton) the other day and never turned a hair. You could bring him in to watch television. He is a lovely horse.

“He would get a mile if they ran a race like that, as they didn’t go a gallop. Last week he was not the quickest away and when they quickened he could not quicken with them.

“It was probably a better run than it looked. The way he finished (Ascot) he was stronger than any of them. He has probably been a better horse this year since we gelded him.

“He is in the Lennox Stakes (at Glorious Goodwood), so we will look at that.”
